Copilot agent with MCP

Hello,

I built in Copilot Studio an agent using MCP. I want to use it to make faster all the setup when creating a new legal entity. Here are some topics for which I couldn´t find anywhere the answers.

  • Using MCP is not for free. Is the credits usage influence by using different models? (GPT-5 Chat, 5.5, 5.6…..). How can I track the usage?
  • I prepared setup Excel files like AP/AR/GL/FA parameters…. I uploaded them and asked my agent to create the new records in my new LE. After uploading 20 files in a day, I got a notification that I reached the daily limit. Does anybody know where this limitation comes from or how can it be changed/extended?
  • When trying to set method of payments, I got feedback from the agent that setup can´t be done as “Methods of payment aren’t exposed via OData, so I can’t create it directly in D365.” (the same for Depreciation books). One interesting thing: when my agent was under tests - just Save, not Publish - it could do successfully the setup (create the method of paymnets according to Excel file). After publishing it, I got the message mentioned above. Does anyone experience it?

    Hi Liana,

    Can you confirm which Copilot Studio license/plan you're on? That'll change the answers to all three points (credit consumption rates, daily capacity limits, and even what your agent is allowed to touch depend on this).

    Also, for point 3 (Method of Payment / Depreciation Books) — this is likely unrelated to licensing. Those two aren't exposed as public OData entities in standard D365FO, so no agent can create/update them via OData regardless of plan. Worth checking what connector/action your agent actually called during testing vs after publish, since that behavior difference suggests it wasn't really writing through OData in test mode either.

    Once you confirm your license type, happy to point you to the exact limits/pricing page that applies to you.

    Hi Liana,

    Can you share what exact instructions you used for your agent? What exact version of Dynamics 365 F&O are you using? Did you connect the ERP MCP server or Dataverse MCP server? Please tell more about your agent as the method of payment or deprecation books should be handled via the ERP MCP server. The MCP server has options to use data entity definitions, but also can interact with forms. What is used or blocked, depends on how the agent was built.

    About credits consumption, Microsoft just released a Copilot credits guide. You can monitor consumption using this link: Power Platform admin center (Copilot Studio Usage).
    About limits, I have worked with allocation to agents, but this did not show any option to set a limit per day. Can you share a screenshot with the exact error message?

    Hello,

    I´m back with some info.
    1. regarding the files limit, here is the message I got:

    I still check the licence topic.
    2. credit consumption: I used it with GPT 5 and GPT 5.6. With GPT 5.6, it consumed 3 times more credits than with GPT 5 and got a bit better results.
    3. The agent is connected to 365 ERP MCP server:

    Another case, for terms of payment, I tried to assign different translations, but didn´t work. It´s a bit frustrating, as I saw many videos online where this issue was completed without any problem.

    Hi Liana,

    Thanks for the additional details. Please note that the reply from Anton was not intended for you. 

    The 20-file limit is a limit per conversation, not a daily limit. In some point, a conversation should be ended or a new conversation should be started.

    The model you choose can have indeed impact on the credit consumption, but also what type of prompt you provide. When a model is reasoning more, then this has influence on the consumption.

    When I read your instructions, I suggest to have some details for the MCP server to know what and when something is available. An example instruction can be found here: Build an agent with Dynamics 365 ERP MCP - Finance & Operations | Dynamics 365 | Microsoft Learn. Ensure the part that instructs the agent what different tools are available will be part of your instruction.

    Thanks for the feedback!
    Related to instructions, I copied them as defined on that MS page and pasted to my agent. What exactly it should do, I defined as Skills. (create, update). Do you think it´s better to define the actions/rules better under Instructions than as skills?

    And something else I had to reply: I work with 10.0.48 version.

    Hi Liana,

    There is a conceptual difference between the instructions and skills. An instruction are guardrails what an agent is allowed to do. Skills are specific capabilities that describes how to perform tasks. Skills are usually reusable across different agents.
    By using the instructions from Microsoft, do you already noticed a difference in result for the methods of payment and depreciation books?

    Hi @CU19031338-1  , 

     

    1) You can track the usage by using the following path for your MCP Agents : - 

    Power Platform admin center → Licensing → Copilot Studio → Manage Agents (shows month-to-date credits per agent, lets you set caps as well as per your requirement).

     

    2) The error which you received after uploading 20 files is a quite common error and can be easily tracked by using the path - Power Platform admin center → Resources → Capacity for AI Builder allocation.

     

    3) Method of payment issue is not a bug but a tool switch problem. MCP has two separate paths - Data tools (Odata) and Form tools (UI View Model). When your agent was unpublished you test was probably done by Form tools and it worked fine but after publishing the orchestrator might have defaulted to Data tools that's why you are getting this error. The easy fix to this is you can instruct the agent while giving your prompt to use form tools explicitly for your specific entities and then check whether is working fine or not.
