NAV backup security issue

I am using Symantec Backup Exec to backup my Microsoft Dynamic NAV data. One day, the backup failed because of a bug in Symantec Backup Exec. An IT consultant said the following :

"If we haven't experienced any bug, don't update the software because that update can create new unknown bugs that breaks our current system. This is a critical backup software for NAV that must not stop working. As long as the software works well, don't touch it at all."

Have you ever heard of the following opinion? Is this true?

I thought the best thing is to always update our software to the newest stable version.

Generally, backup of the system should have nothing in common with the updates you make.

It is recommended that you always for for the newest version of software, and always perform backups (that should not technically depend on your updates).

However, if there are business critical processes that NAV covers, careful tests should be performed in advance before making updates, including tests of backup - this is what tests are for.

Hi Varian,

Are you using SQL Server Database? If yes, you can backup NAV Database via SQL Server while waiting for Symantec Backup fixed.
