Is the weighted average cost stored in the AX database?

Hi,

We are currently implementing D365 F&O and are using the weighted average date inventory valuation method.

We price sales orders based on replacement cost, so I can look at a sales line and understand how much margin is earned relative to replacement.  I want to know what my true profit (sales revenue - weighted average cost) is at the time the order is created.  I know I can find this information after the order is invoiced, but my requirement is report gross margin booked each day based on the weighted average cost.

Is there a table in the AX database that can tell me the weighted average cost for each item in inventory?

Thanks!

    Hi AUaero,

There is no average cost stored in the database. While posting transactions like the sales order, it will use a running average which will be recalculated during the inventory closing task to reflect the correct average cost. The reason is that you can post transactions in a different order with more recent dates before posting other transactions with the older date.

    Hi AUaero,

To get this immediate insight, have you thought about using standard costs or moving average costing methods that don't require an inventory closing/recalculation?

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

André, thank you for your reply.  I was afraid this was the case.  My requirement says that I need to be able to report gross margin for any orders booked on a given day regardless of whether the order has been posted.  I also need to trend this data over time which means I need to know the weighted average value for the cost of goods at any point in the past as well as being able to calculate it at the current moment.

Since we are using weighted averaged dated for inventory costing, that means we recalculate the WAC each day.  Since that value isn't stored in a table, what are the steps D365 uses to make that calculation?  If I can recreate the calculation, couldn't I create an extension to write the weighted average cost of goods to the salesline table?

Ludwig, thanks for replying.  Unfortunately, we are deep into this project and can't change the costing method at this point.  Perhaps my best bet is to recreate the calculation that D365 is performing for the inventory valuation and write that value to a table in the AX database.
