ADD-IN ERROR You don't have permissions to use this add-in.

All users are reporting the above message when attempting to use " Edit in Excel " anywhere within Business Central v26.4 with Excel 365 while " Open in Excel " works fine.  This is for an environment which all the same users were previously able to do without issue.  No changes to BC, Office or Windows including browsers are known to occur.   Reviewing online content, many articles involve setup however this was a working environment already setup.

What situations are known to cause the above error to display for an already configured environment?   What permissions is it referring to?

    Hi there,

Thanks for sharing the issue. The error you're encountering with "Edit in Excel" in Business Central v26.4 typically relates to Office add-in permissions or authentication issues, even in previously working environments.

Here are a few things to check:

    1. Office Add-in Permissions

    • Ensure that the Excel add-in for Business Central is still enabled in the Office 365 admin center.
    • Users may need to have "ReadWrite" permissions for the add-in to function properly.

    2. Azure AD Authentication

    • Sometimes, token or session issues can cause this error. Try clearing browser cache, signing out, and signing back in.
    • Make sure users are properly authenticated via Azure Active Directory.

    3. Excel Trust Center Settings

    • Open Excel > File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings.
    • Check that add-ins are not disabled and that protected view settings are not interfering.

    4. Role and Permission Sets in BC

    • Even if no changes were made, verify that users still have the "Excel Export Action" permission set or equivalent.
    • Check if any environment-level security policies have changed.

    5. Browser and Office Updates

    • Although you mentioned no updates occurred, it’s worth checking for pending Office updates or browser extensions that might block add-in functionality.

Let me know if this helps, and please mark the response as helpful if it solved your issue 😊

    Best regards!

Hi, This appears to be a local Excel policy issue. You can try the following browser versions to see if it works.
    Then consult your local administrator.

    Thanks.

This error usually means the Excel add-in lost its permissions or the user only has read rights.

✔ Re-publish the Microsoft Dynamics Office Add-in from M365 Admin and grant admin consent again in Entra ID.

✔ Make sure users have a permission set with Modify rights (Open in Excel = read, Edit in Excel = write).

✔ If it still fails, remove/re-add the add-in in Excel.
