Is there a best practice to copy the entire contents of an organization to new organization?

I have been able to find guides for on copying premise organizations... but what about online?

    Hi,

If you refer to the manner in which you in CRM on-premise can take a backup of a CRM database, restore it and redeploy it in the deployment manager, no, there is not currently a similar way of setting up a similar copy of an entire organization.

As I see it, there are two possible options for you.

    1. Request a backup of the database from the CRM operations support. Restore this database in an on-premise/partner environement.

    2. Try to get some Microsoft entity like Microsoft Consulting Services to help you out in buying a new instance of CRM and then doing a backup-restore-redeployment on that instance. Not sure you can do that, but if you are/have a large enough customer you might be able to get their attention and they might be able to do this for you.

As far as a best practice, I Think that 1 is as far as it gets. The problem is that doing development in an onprem Environment is different from online since Polaris release, making that a bad method for development for online. Otherwise it is a good practice.

    Good luck!

Power of Choice is an option, there are some other options for that you may reach the CRM Online Support team

    1. Call Billing 877-CRM Choice ( 877-276-2464) and requests for a backup of the org

    2. Billing will verify credentials and checks to see if it’s a migration from Online to on-premise (closing out the online subscription) or if it’s a test / dummy backup.

    3. They initiate the support case that comes to the online team

    4. Online team takes a backup, puts the files in a remote location

    5. Support engineer (from the CRM online team) checks the backup against the org name

    6. The DB is put on a FTP site for download

    Thanks,

    Mohammad

To do this you will need to follow the following summarised steps:

You will first need to request a copy of your Online SQL database so that you can restore to your local SQL environment. To do this you will need to contact Live Customer Service by calling 1-877-CRM-CHOICE (1-877-276-2464).

The backup of your Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online SQL Server database must be restored by using a server running the same (or a newer) version of Microsoft SQL Server as is running in Microsoft’s data centers.  Microsoft will provide you the information required at time of request.

Restore the database to your local environment as per normal database restore processes.

Install your CRM on premise installation and ensure the latest hot fixes have been applied, the list of required hotfixes will be provided by Microsoft Online services team.

Import the SQL database as a new organisation via the CRM Deployment manager. Right click on the organisations and select import organisation to kick the process off and then follow the steps in the wizard

Once the import is successful, you are all done and can now start using dynamics CRM as a on premise implementation.
