Sales Line reservation - How does it work exactly?

I am having hard time understanding how AX is choosing to reserve item to its location in the warehouse.

Example:

I have QOH in 3 locations in the warehouse - Locs A, B and ZZ with ZZ being a bulk location.
What I'm expecting during reservation is that the quantity desired should be reserved to location A (in alphabetical order and also it is after all a picking location) - but it seems that AX does whatever it wants and some items are being reserved properly and the others are not. I don't really know how to even start troubleshooting this.

Storage dimension is SWL.

Do you think the setting in the Item Model Group could be causing this?

Reservation FIFO-Date Controlled check box was the setting I shouldn't have had on. As soon as removed, the inventory was reserved to first available location with QOH in alphabetical order.

    Thanks for all the input!

The best info. I have found on the sequence that AX uses for reserving stock is on this blog post, and it is as you say - AX will reserve against locations in alphabetical order (if batch is not used).

    kurthatlevik.wordpress.com/.../reservation-sequence-in-ax-2012

The blog post does say 'If the same item is located in many different buffer locations', where a buffer location is a bulk location, but I can't really think that AX makes a distinction between bulk and picking locations at this time.

However, you also not that you have 'Date controlled' ticked on the Item Model Group. Again, I have to refer to documentation and not experience!

It's clear the functionality of this tick box ensures that inventory received earliest will be reserved first. What's not clear is whether this functionality only applies if the item is Batch tracked. Sorry not to have all the answers :-(

If you're using AX 2012 RTM, FP or R2, you also have access to functionality known as WMS II (Warehouse Management II).

I'm not saying I recommend jumping in feet first, especially if you've been successfully picking directly from the sales order, but you do have the ability then to specify that reservations should be made against picking locations before bulk locations. However, you also have a whole other thing called Shipments to worry about, which might make it overkill.

No, we do not use any other dimensions than Site Warehouse Location.

And on the items that you sell, is the dimension 'Batch' enabled? i.e. do you Batch track these items?

    That's correct.

    Hi Drumcode,

In your setup, when is AX making the automatic reservation. Is it when the Sales Order Line is created?

I'd like to clarify on the reserving example:

Most of the time AX reserves properly in alphabetical order, other times it reserves inventory to the ZZ (bulk) location even though we have QOH in the picking locations (A or B)

When pick list is printed it obviously sends the picker to the bulk location to pick, which doesn't make any sense.

Using Default Issue Location functionality is out of the questions, causes more harm than good in our environment.
