SSL Certificates in Production Environment

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi Dynamics pros,

I have a few questions that are not readily apparent to me:

  • why is it not recommended to use self-signed certificates in a production environment?
  • how many SSL certificates are needed for a very basic installation of NAV (single tenant environment with a single NAV server instance) and using NAV with both local and public IP?

I hope someone can make this more understandable. My assumption is that a company can just buy certificates from a company such as Comodo or Symantec, but this is a bit confusing to me.

Regards,

Ted

    Hi Theodore,

It only depends on your scenario. Of course, you can use a SS cerfiticate for your environment, but your clients should recognize your local CA as a trusted CA.

If you work and interact with external users (and connect for example with other services like PowerBI) is better to use a certificate from an external and recognized CA, like Symantec, Geotrust, etc.

    Good luck!
