In Depreciation book, do i need to define my official value model again?

Dear

Can someone briefly explain to me the difference between the Value Model and the depreciation book?

I do understand that you can have several depreciation book where one could be the official government rate or method and the other could be for corporate reporting purpose only;

BUT if I do Setup my Value model (to be the official depreciation that affects my ledger) and i go to my depreciation book (to define my other internal books) , Should I AGAIN define a depreciation book for the same value model that i defined earlier in the Fixed Asset Group >> Value Model Tab?

just in case i didn't explain myself well, should i do the below

Value Model

  1. Straight Line (Official Depreciation)

Depreciation Book

  1. Straight Line (Should I define my official depreciation once again here in the depreciation book?)
  2. Double declining rate 10%
  3. Double declining rate 20%

your feedback is mostly appreciated

Regards

    Hi N.W.,

The depreciation books do not have ledger postings, like you mentioned. You don't have to setup a depreciation book for the same.

You can use the depreciation books for government regulations, but also for creating multiple calculation scenarios. It was mainly introduced for US and Canadian companies.

    Thank you for the explanation,

So on a monthly basis i am going to run the depreciation proposal for the regular depreciation,

Should I then go to the Depreciation Book Journal to run the depreciation for the other books?

Note I am doing that but it is not producing any lines, am i missing any setup?

    Dear Andre

I tried a scenario where I attached 2 value models (I didn't create any depreciation books) to a fixed asset, 1st one posting to the current layer and the other posting to the operations layer; then i went ahead an did a depreciation for a few month.

i went to the fixed asset value model and i saw that it did indeed affect both value model and both of them were reduced in the remaining period field, and the GL only got affected by the first value model which is posting to the current posting layer

but when i went to the Fixed Asset Book compare to compare the two value models, i got the same figures for value model one and two and thus the difference was ZERO , is there something wrong with the report? or is there a setup i am missing ?

    Hi N.W.,

To be honest in the implementations I was involved we never had the requirement to use multiple value models or depreciation books. For investigating the functionality I used the demonstration database with the Contoso set. I don't know if you missed setup or what transactions you exactly did.
