Dynamics GP Document Attach Word/Excel Compatibility mode issue

I am working with a client that get word and excel files that are in compatibility mode. When they attach them in GP they cannot be previewed. If we save the file to a current version document format and attach there is no problem. The file obviously opens fine when it comes in but does not open from GP. Is this a known issue or is it documented somewhere that the excel and word documents have to be a certain version format?
