Hi,

I am currently using AX 2012 R2 CU7.

I wanted to upgrade it to AX 2012 R2 CU9. I have downloaded the Hotfix from PartnerSource but it contains 2 files,

- KB3092626_BinaryOnly

-KB3092626

A lot of customizations are being done by the vendor for which I don't have the List plus documentation for the customizations done.

I am new to upgrade task  so I would carrying out this task on TEST first by replicating the PROD environment.

My query are as below:

1. What is the difference between "KB3092626_BinaryOnly" & "KB3092626". Can you please elaborate regarding both the files.

2. I am following the upgrade guide provided by Microsoft "InstallGuide_CU9_AX2012R2"

3. Besides taking the back of "ABC_Live" & "ABC_Live_model", is there anything that i need to take care of so that I don't run into trouble if in case I would needing to revert to the initial state as before the upgrade.

4. Is there any check by which we can make sure nothing of the existing cuxtomization was broken as a result of this upgrade activity.

Would highly appreciate for some insight into the above queries in order to understand it well.

Would appreciate for the help & thanks a lot in advance.

Sincerely,

Muneeb

    Hi Muneeb,

    Regarding your questions:

    1) binary only are the kernel files. This is the client and server executables only. It does not contain application elements. The other file is the complete update.

    2) what is your question here?

    3) if you have a backup of these 2 databases, you will be fine.

    4) you need to know about all customizations and where it could have changed the standard coding. These elemenst needs to be verified. There is no tool which will tell you if overlayered objects will break standard functionality or if customizations still work correctly or not. You need to verify yourself and also make sure it.will be tested thoroughly before taking the update in production.

    Hi Andre,

Thank you so much for your quick response. To proceed further,

    1. So for point #1, I need to proceed with the steps for both the files ?

    2. I was just indicating that I am using that document as my reference document. Is it fine to proceed with that?

    3. Ok, understood.

    4. I understand. But what if we don't know what was the customizations done by the vendor and moreover there are no documentations for the same. Is there any way to get these details before we apply this upgrade so that we can cross verify after the upgrade?

    Would appreciate for your help.

    Sincerely,

    Muneeb

    Hi Muneeb,

    1. The KB3092626 contains both kernel and application, so you will need only this one.

    2. The installation guide to use is OK. In addition you can download the AX 2012 Upgrade guide from Microsoft download: www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

    4. Before you start the upgrade process you can run the impact analysis which will find possible code conflicts. But then still it would be recommended to know about all customizations to be able to perform correct tests.

    Ok.

Thank you so much for your help Andre.

I was still thinking for a way out. Something that I can think of considering my situation here is,

    1. Ok.

    2. Ok.

    4. Create a Shared Project lets say "AllCustomizations". Now filter all the AOT objects for  outer layers like VAR, CUS, & USR leaving besides the system layers.

So, I would have the single project containing all the customizations done earlier. This project will help me out to compare and see if all the customizations are in place or NOT. And take proper actions in case of any issues post upgrade task.

Can you please let me know your suggestions on the above.

    Would appreciate for your help.

    Sincerely,

    Muneeb

Further, is there any link from where I can get the details of the hotfixes(KBs) (excel or any document) involved as part of CU9 Update to AX 2012 R2 CU7.

    Hi Muneeb,

The code upgrade usually done per layer. Check the upgrade guide for this.

When you start the update process you get a list of KB numbers with a description. You can check these. Note that some general changes or features part of CU9 are not listed seperately.

One question, I have AX 2012 R2 CU7. As we are planning to update to CU9, should I first apply CU8 and then CU9 OR we can directly apply CU9?

Asking as I wanted to understand that applying CU9 on CU7 will include the hotfixes between CU7 and CU9 also?

    Would appreciate for your help.

    Sincerely,

    Muneeb

    Hi Muneeb,

The updates are cumulative, so CU9 includes CU8 and you can skip the CU8 update.
