Removing Spare Parts from Item in Inventory

Hello Dynamics Community,

One of my customers has a scenario that we have not been able to accomplish very well in standard NAV. I hope someone could give suggestions or if you have a solution, let me know.

Scenario:

Our client purchases items for resale (tools, machinery, etc.) and also does repairs for customers if the item is under warranty.

Sometimes they do not have the necessary spare part in stock, but they need to make an urgent repair to keep the customer happy. In this case, they will remove a part from an item that is in stock.

What the customer wants is to track which items have had parts removed from them, that the stock count does not include items that have had spare parts removed, and that once the spare parts are purchased and received in stock that it will be possible to restore the spare part into the item.

Has anyone run into this scenario? Did you develop something?

Thanks in advance!

    Hi Manish,

Thanks for your idea, but I do not yet see how the service module could help with my scenario. In this case, they need this functionality to track internal changes in stock counts due to physically removing a part from an Inventory item (for example, remove a fan blade from a fan). In there system, there would be two retail items: the fan blade and the fan.

In my scenario, they sell the fan blade because fan blades are out of stock. In my scenario, they need to track that the fan is no longer sellable until the replenish the fan blades.

    Thanks!

    Hi Theodore,

the simplest way is to move items with spare parts removed into a different location. Then your stock count on the main location will be fine, and you will know exactly how many items you have with spare parts removed. When parts are put back, move the item back into the main location.

The only downside is that you can't tell which spare parts were removed and I can't think of any 'standard' way of doing this.

My company has the same requirement. What we do is possibly not a perfect solution but depending on how many stock lines you have it might be worth considering though it requires Production Orders and if you're not already using those will probably require quite a bit of extra setup.

If Item ABC123 needs to be broken down to release a spare part SPAREPART1 we create a Production Order to make an item F-ABC123, consuming an ABC123 and with a negative consumption of part SPAREPART1 (i.e. you're creating a SPAREPART1 as a by-product).

It's clear then to anyone that the F-ABC123 is not in saleable condition and you have a SPAREPART1 for your urgent repair.

You then know that you will require a new SPAREPART1 to 'fix' the original item with another Production Order working the other way, i.e.  consume the F-ABC123 and SPAREPART1 to make a new ABC123.

You will need to find out or make a judgement call on the 'cost' of the SPAREPART1 to deduct from the cost of your ABC123 to give a value to the F-ABC123.

I believe that this is what our customer is doing right now. I think I will tell them to keep doing it that way.
