Export to Excel Logging or Tracking

Wondering if anybody knows of any tools or 3rd party projects for logging any information in regards to Export to Excel? We would like to log User, Data Tables and time of export any time a user calls the Export to Excel options on any form.  I'd hate to re-create the wheel if something like this already exists.

I have the same question (0)

    Hi Michael,

Out of the box, there is no logging for these type of calls. You can check if you can extend the solution when a user will click the button. I haven't heard of this requirement before. What is the actual background of your question?

Thanks. It's a business requirement in regards to data security. The fear is users exporting sensitive data using Export to Excel, then leaving the company. Management want's the visibility to see what data was exported by any user.

I haven't reviewed the objects in VS yet. As mentioned originally, I didn't want to recreate something that may have already been developed if I didn't have to.

    Hi Michael,

Have you considered restricting the export function itself for sensitive data? Still, users would be able to make screenshots instead of exporting the data.

    Andre,

How can export to excel be restricted for sensitive data and not all data for a User?  As far as I know, if they User can read it they can export it (given they have the export to excel privilege).

Are you saying there is a way in the system to identify data/entities/tables that cannot be exported by a User even if they have the export to excel privilege?

    Hi Jim,

If sensitive data is displayed on the grid, users can export it to Excel. If the users have access to data entities, they can also use the Open in Excel function and see all fields part of the entity. Using the security configuration, you can deny access to some fields in a data entity.

We've restricted to Open in Excel to most users to keep from any accidental publishing. However, all users have the option to Export to Excel as they feed this data into outside Excel reports. Management wants to place a trace anytime the Export to Excel is called. I've pushed on this request, but it's what they want. I'm about to start reviewing extensions around this feature, but was hoping somebody has already created something similar.

I would really advise to reconsider this requirement (even though I understand that has already been done, I would repeat the advise).

Data can be exported not just through the "Export to excel" function, but also through Odata or DMF exports. Any solutions you build should also consider those export possibilities.

In addition the data which they might want to control, could be available through D365FO reports as well or could be stored in BI/DW type places. Just imagine the number of places you might need to start logging.

Even if you build the the different logs, what will you do with the logging records? I assume the users have access to the data as part of their work and exporting/reviewing it will be a legitimate business activity.

I would highly doubt the value of such a requirement.

    Nikola,

There are far too many ways for Users to extract data from the system, but what tools are available for an Administrator to see who is using what to connect to or extract data?  If there is, can these connections be blocked?

In our case, we have a datalake where Users are supposed to be getting the data for their PowerBI reporting and extraction needs, and not connecting to CRM directly.

For example, we have hundreds of CRM Users that also use PowerBI, how do I know who is using PowerBI to access CRM data and can I block these connections?
