Is it possible to assign a user to two roles in the same project?

Is it possible to assign a user to two roles in the same project? I've set up a project, and a team. However I have a team member who will play one role from x date to y date. Then this same user will play a different role from z date to the end of the project.

I have tried to assign this user to the project again after I created their first role. I get an error that the team member already exists in project and the system will not let me assign them again to the second role.

Is there a solution or a workaround?

This was soooo helpful. I did not solve my problem initially but I was able to utilize a similar process and come up with a work around. Basically creating the requirement for a generic resource to fill the second role, allowed me to open the requirement and assign my team member to that role. Then the system did exactly as you suggested in that it combined the hours of the two roles to one resource. The only downside is that it deleted the second role completely from the "Team" section. The work around was simply to add on 0.10 hours to that role and not assign it to my main Resource. Its silly I know but it works for us, to help show that the role has been fulfilled. Thanks for the nudge
