Does AX 2012 R2 work with Active Directory (Windows Server 2003)?

Does Dynamics AX 2012 R2 work with Active Directory which runds Windows Server 2003?

If it does, are there any problems or things need to be considered?

    According to system requirements, the domain controller must run in Windows 2008 mode or later.

    This description can be found in the system requirements published in May 2013 (not in the one of former version).

    Would it be possible to tell us why the AD on WS2003 does not work with AX 2012 (just because of the support condition from Microsoft, or because of some technical issues?)?
