Upgrading from AX 2012 RTM to AX 7

Hi Guys,

I want some suggestions from you. What is more feasible, upgrading from AX 2012 RTM directly to AX 7, or we should gradually upgrade, e.g. from AX 2012 RTM to AX 2012 R1, then to R2, then R3 and then finally AX 7? Or is there some other better way to do the same? Please explain what should be a better way to upgrade AX 2012 RTM to AX 7. TIA :)

Regards,

Ashish

André is accurate in his words. let me add one more point, you can also use R2CU7 version for upgrade. I have done that practically. It went fine. But, its not correct for everyone else also. Because New version RTW was mapped with R3CU9 so that can be best choice to start upgrade. The more closure you will be to R3CU9, less ambiguities you will face in upgraded solution. Else there will be huge job waiting for you to resolve code conflicts.

    Hi,

There will be no support to directly upgrade code from RTM to AX7. Therefor you need to go to R3 with CU9. Probably this will be extended with CU10 or later updates. You can skip intermediate versions.

About data migration: we have to wait until Microsoft announces the tool or use DIXF.

Have a look at AX wiki pages for help on the code upgrade:

    Hi André,

Thank you so much for the prompt reply. As of now it is only possible for ax 2012 R3 CU9 to upgrade to AX 7, but in case in future if microsoft enables ax 2012 RTM to be upgraded to AX 7 directly, should we upgrade the ax gradually from 2012 RTM, then r2, r3 and then to Ax 7? Or upgrading directly would be a better option? Last thing, can you please let me know the link where the steps are given (for both code and data, as the AX that we are using is highly customized) for upgrading AX 2012 R3 CU 9 to AX 7? Thanks once again.

    Hi Ashish,

If you are referring to data upgrade, you have to wait until a tool will be released. For now you can use Data Import Export Framework to do the job.

Code upgrade is currently only supported from AX 2012 R3 with CU9. If you don't have customizations or just a few, probably you can re-develop them directly in AX7 rather than using the code upgrade tool. To get on R3 CU9, you can use a direct in-place upgrade from RTM.
