what is the difference between System Workflow and Custom Workflow?

Hi,

System workflow is something that you will get out of the box, so you have predefined steps available. Whereas custom workflow is a way to extent out of the box workflow's steps, so we can develop custom .net assembly and provide new steps based on requirement. when our .net assembly will be registered to CRM out custom steps will be available in out of box workflow designer.
