Security configuration: How to find out more details / explanations about duties and privileges

Dear Community,

I am new in the ERP D365 world (comming from CRM), and currently I am struggeling a little to get a better understanding about the Security Configuration. Lets take this example:

- I want to analyse what privileges the role "Office Integration User" grants

- I therefore have expanded the role into its privileges. Apparently, it just grants some display menue items, named "ExternalFeedConfiguration"

I read the MS-Doc articles about what the security structure looks like in D365 F&O (roles, duties, privileges, permissions). But where can I now find out more about what these privileges mean exactly? Like:

- Explanation about what this display menu item addresses, caused by the privilege "Maintain external feed configuration"?

- Kind of a wiki that shows some examples?

- What happens if I take this privilege away?

etc.

I would like to understand in a better way what each privilege / permission actually causes. Unfortunately, I have not found any explanation in the docs, or in some community articles. Perhaps you have an idea where to find some more knowledge about that.

BR

Flo

    Hi Flo,

To get more understanding, you would need to know where a menu item is used. In this example, it might be too hard to find it quickly. In that case, the development environment has your answer. You can go to a DEV VM, open Visual Studio and check where the menu item is used and what exact form it is opening.

Note that the security is more complex as you might think from the documentation.

There's no detailed documentation about every privilege, the name/description of privileges and menu items is the best info that there is.

In a dev system you can study exact details of the implementation but that's not exactly documentation.

Security setup in D365FO is a huge topic. You need to find the balance between having a detailed setup and the cost of doing it.
