GP 2016 on Server 2019 RDS

Curious if anyone ran GP client front end on a server 2019 but connects to a GP2016 running SQL 2014 on Server 2016 (Current)

Basically keeping the back end on 2016 but newer front end with a 2016 client ?

Thanks.

    Yes..

And I can confirm that I encountered some strange behaviors at the time with GP 2013 too when running on W2012R2 already.

Your best bet is most likely to upgrade your GP to the latest 18.3 release.. Let me know if you need any help with that. From 2016 it's a pretty straight forward upgrade.

Thanks,  its something that I already knew but wanted to get some input.   I already see weird rds issue on GP2016 on Server 2016.. but its something that I can't replicate all the time..

    Hi Michael,

Justin provided the official standpoint of Microsoft for GP 2016, which is not supported on 2019 server..

Consider W2019 Server like the most recent editions of Win10 on the workstation side and this is the same problem more or less.. you might run into weird behaviors of GP due mostly on .NET compatibility issues for the GP client.. It might work, but your users may call you more often than you'd like about GP behaving strangely (not from the functional side, but just on the GUI).

One thing that bugs me on the newer Windows platform is the 'borderless' window frames in most objects in Windows, which makes it hard to sometimes 'see' where the real frame of a form or window is.. as Microsoft decided to part from the 3D desktop rendering way back in Win2012.. The last "good" version to me was Server 2008 :-) and Win7 on the workstation side.. everything else that came after is a failure on the UI side IMHO.

RE: GP 2016 on Server 2019 RDS

    Hello Michael,

We do not recommend (or support) running GP 2016 on Server 2019. This goes for the client, not just the SQL instance.

I know Server 2019 specifically has some odd RDS issue where the GP splash screen will not go away with GP 2018 or older. This does not appear to occur on GP 18.2 or newer, which is part of why we note GP 18.2 as being the only GP Version supported on Server 2019.

As always, the community may have other ideas here.
