Dynamic 365 Guides : External Input Local Network

Hello,

I've been looking at the 365 Guides and had a question abouts how it can communicate with external processes.

With a 365 guide can I recieve an external input from from a TCP/IP server, and could this input then be used to step through the guide?

Is there any documention about how guides interact with with external processes?

Thanks,

Luke

    Hi Luke,

Currently Dynamics 365 Guides does not support navigating/progressing through a guide with via an external input as you have described. The product only supports a human operator navigating to next steps. Can you tell me more about your scenario and why the external input is important so that I can file it as a feature request?

    Hello Shirley,

Thank you for the response, the 365 Guides do a great job as a standalone application. My aim was to be able to communicate with a local network device during one of the guide's steps.

The 365 Guides fulfil my requirements apart from being able to verify an action with another device.

    The Scenario:

While using 365 Guides to create an assembly task, a verification step is required to check an action has been completed using an external input (e.g. TCP/IP).

The external input would be "OK", or "NOT OK". Navigation would then occur to the appropriate step in a similar way as the 'Question Steps' but without the operator input.

    Example:

An operator is working through a 365 Guide

The guide asks the operator to press a physical button

The guide waits for the external input from the physical button

The guide receives a "OK" message, then goes to the appropriate step.

    Example:

An operator is working through a 365 Guide

The guide tells the operator to load an item onto a set of "smart scales"

The smart scales check if the item's weight is within a tolerance

The guide receives a "OK" message, then goes to the appropriate step.

    Thanks,

    Luke

    Hi Luke,

Thanks for the details! We could leverage guides links and PowerApps/website feature to solve for your scenario.

Basically what I'm thinking is the verification step could be a website or a Power Apps that you launch to do that verification to the external input. If the external input says "OK", then a link to the guide or a specific guide step is presented back to the user to proceed.

    Thank you for help,

I have been looking at the Power Apps and unfortunately I don't see a way to do something in a low level way such as sending a TCP/IP message on a local network using them.

If my understanding is correct, Power Apps use Connectors to send and retrieve data, all of which seem to be high level and travel via the internet rather than a local network. Power Apps Connector Reference

    Thanks,

    Luke

    Hi Luke,

Ah, I see what you mean. You are correct in regards to PowerApps. Guides does not currently support an external input from a TCP/IP server.
