New category on top level in category hierarchy

Hi, all,

How can add category on level-1 of category hierarchy? My test is in Contoso (Ax2012 R3).

Contoso online hierarchy has only one category on top level-1 – “Electronics”. I want to add new Category “Home products” on the same lavel-1. The button “New category node” makes a child category of the selected category – child categories are on level-2,3... I can create category on level-1 only for brand new hierarchy with no categories.

Can you please try by placing your cursor at TOP node and then click on New Category Node

Sohaib, this will create child category of All.

This is what i needed (yellow part of the picture is made in Paint, not in AX)

Gentleman its not made in paint you need to click edit button first, then you would be able to modify it

If there is any functional solution, I am not aware of that.

Technically you can do certain fixes, by updating data in table EcoResCategory .

See below image. Compare it with my previously provided image and compare data of Red marked columns .

A parent category has always Level 1, also for a parent category there is value 0 in field ParentCategory .

so all you can do, update Level to 2 and paste value in Category hierarchy.  Don't forget to filter categories by Categories Hierarchy.  Insert a new node from the table with Level 1and making new records parentcategory as 0.

Kindly do all of this on a test server and make sure to have backup before doing.

This solution is not convinient for the end users.

Do you know if it's reported as bug to MS?

Even though I tried your solution but received an error message:

"Cannot add child category. Parent category specified is not valid"

    • It’s not a BUG at all. Even if you will report to Microsoft, you will get the answer it’s not supported.

    • Because if you will see the code inside method ValidateWrite of Table EcoResCategory, at line number 40, you will find label as under

    return checkFailed("@SYS134255");

@SYS134255 means Changing parent category is not supported.

    • Previously the solution which I provided you, you can say it’s a hack, or a solution which will not be recommended by Microsoft. I being a technical person, still believe, it can be managed by playing with tables.

This part of MS documentation answers my question:

"Each hierarchy consists of a parent category and a structure of subcategories, which are also named the child categories..... The first category that you create for a new category hierarchy is always the parent category of all other categories in the hierarchy. "

So It's clear now: second category on level-1 is not supported.
