Supported Browser for Dynamics 365 App for Outlook

Hi,

Our company is planning to remove IE from our laptops and make MS Edge as or new standard default browser, and we're currently doing some test to check for any possible issues if we move to Edge. Part of the testing is disabling IE and setting MS Edge as default browser.

Since we're supporting Dynamics 365, one thing included in our testing is Dynamics 365 App for Outlook.

Once IE id disabled, we tried using Dynamics 365 App for Outlook, and we've encountered this Add-In Error:

Clicking the link give us this result:

It says in this article that Outlook is using IE to display web pages, so Dynamics App is using IE to show its page.

Any ideas what changes should we do to make Dynamics App for Outlook work? This is critical for us since we're planning to roll-out Dynamics App for our CRM users.

Thanks,

Gracia

RE: Supported Browser for Dynamics 365 App for Outlook

    Hello Gracia,

In regards of which browser the app for Outlook is using is dependent upon the below:

App for Outlook uses Microsoft Edge browser when you are using Windows 10 (version 1903 or later) OS and Outlook Click-2-Run client that’s updated to the current channel, Monthly Enterprise channel, or Semi-annual Enterprise channel (16.0.13127.20508 or later). For other combination of Windows and Outlook, App for Outlook uses Microsoft Internet Explorer browser.
So to ensure it utilizes Edge Browser, please ensure that your on the above Windows 10 version build and after the above specified Outlook build.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks,
    Tyson

RE: Supported Browser for Dynamics 365 App for Outlook

    Hi Tyson,

Just checked our PCs and we're currently on Windows 10 version 1809. Since our PCs are managed by our company, we can't do anything about it, we'll just wait if there will be any updates happening in the future.

Thanks for your answer! Very helpful :)

What is you are on Windows 2016 (published desktops) and a volume licensed version of Outlook 2016? We too just removed IE as it is a security vulnerability.

RE: Supported Browser for Dynamics 365 App for Outlook

    Good Morning

We have the same problem like Gracia.

We are running Windows10 (21H2) and have Office2016. The app works on all notebooks, but on the workstation and virtual machines this error message comes up.

This has only been happening for about 4 weeks.

What could be the reason for this?

We do not have IE11 turned off and we use Edge.

We use CRM 365 online with Version 9.2.22112.00192

    Thanks for your reply

    Harry

RE: Supported Browser for Dynamics 365 App for Outlook

With the deprecation of Internet Explorer 11, versions of Outlook which do not use the Edge Webview2, will not work with the Dynamics 365 App for Outlook.  You may need to upgrade to Outlook 2021 which uses Edge with WebView2 to display the D365 App for Outlook add-in.   See the list of Office Versions here and the browser control used:  learn.microsoft.com/.../browsers-used-by-office-web-add-ins

Office Add-ins use an embedded browser control (known as a webview).   Earlier Outlook versions using Webview use Internet Explorer 11 to display the add-in.   If you are using volume-licensed Office versions, you will need to upgrade to Office 2021, which uses Webview2 and Edge to display the add-in.

Requirements were updated to include "All Microsoft Outlook desktop clients on Windows that use Edge WebView2" here:  learn.microsoft.com/.../support-info-deployment
