Capacity Planning - different production times

Dear AX Users!

I have got problem to create production department in AX 2012 R3. Please imagine the situation...

I have got 2 machines A and B. Speed of machine A = 100 pcs/h. Machine B = 50 pcs/h. The speed is the effect of fact that most of my products I produce in that way: 100 pcs -> machine A in 1 hour and 50 pcs in 1 hour when I produce on machine B.

To prioritize production and decide which machine should be used during master schedulling process i use CAPABILITIES. I use it in way showed on MSDN blog:

blogs.msdn.com/.../scheduling-based-on-resource-capabilities-in-microsoft-dynamics-ax-2012.aspx

The problem I mentioned is... I have got new product and engineer checked that I produce new product: 100 pcs->machine A in 1 hour  and 70 pcs -> machine B in 1 hour.

I use CAPACITY formula in my route, but I can not use FACTOR because it is not possible to reach Speed in machine B = 70 pcs/hour in the same route if the machine A=100 pcs/hour.

What to do in this situations? Should I changed FORMULA in my route? I would like to avoid situation to create another alternative route, because my expected effect is that master scheduling will decide on whcich machine should I start production.

I believe you are stuck on this one and need to create two routes if you want the system to be accurate for process time.

You got it right. AX does not take in to account the difference in products on operations, but only the speed of a resource performing this operation. I would hope to see the posibility to override the capacity on the resource pr. route version, but that is yet to be created.

However on a more practical note... How good is your calculations to reality? Are you running very large and long running series? How much does this small deviation affect your planning?

I admit that 20% increase is pretty much, but only if the series are very large will this be an issue. The result of keeping this planned to 50% is that you'll be finished before schedule and get some wiggle room in your plan... Might I suggest keeping it this way if it is only for a few products?

Thak you for your answer. To be honest, I did not think about simplification of my calculations. I have to analize once again my examples.

On first sight I see that on some products I can use route with capability which will allow to plan on 2 machines (A or B depending on capacity). On these products which are more difficult I will use 2 routes and the planner will have to chose which machine is leader.

When I find some best solutions I will share with my exampele.

    Hi Pawel

I think this setup solves your problem:

    1- Create a resource group >>>

    001 - Resource group X

    2- Add machines A and B to 001 - Resource group X
3- you create a route your product and assign resource group to this route

4-On Route setup tab, you should select Capacity selection on Formula field

5-On Route setup tab, you should input 0,01 in Factor field

    (1/100=0,01. This setup used be for machine A = 100 pcs/hour)
    Process time = 1 / ( Capacity / Factor ).

this calculation is always for 1 hour.

    This example: process time (1 / (1 / (1/100) ) ) = 1/100 >>For machine A

    This example: process time (1 / ((7/10) / (1/100) ) ) = 1/70 >>For machine B

6- Go Resources on Organization setup and select Machine A

you input 1 to (WrkCtrTable).Capacity field.

7- Go Resources on Organization setup and select Machine B

you input 0,7 to (WrkCtrTable).Capacity field.

8- Run master scheduling and check capacity reservations.

Machine A is first use by MP. Because it has got high capacity

    best regards..
