BOM Versions - From Qty field

Hi All,

I am trying to test the from qty field in bom version form in AX2012. The description of the field says that

From Qty is the Minimum Quantity for which this BOM version is valid. I have created 2 bom versions and set the From quantity to 500.

And then I created a production order for the item and select this BOM version.

The problem is I was able to release the production order even if the quantity i try to produce is only 1.

Right now, I do not know if this field (From Qty) is really being used by AX or not..

I tried the From date and To date and set the date in the past and also was able to create production order and released it

The only difference is that the BOM version field when creating a production order is not automatically populated. Is this the only effect of from qty and From date to date? Even if it is below the minimum and in the past you can still use the BOM version as long as it is still active?

Like Guy sais... It is the other way around.

You might be looking for "default order settings" and use multiple, standard and minimum combo to get the effect you want (in conjunction with BOM from sizes).

You would create BOMs for certain intervals and when the system picks the BOM it picks the right active BOM based on the quantity of the production created.

If you define/select a BOM when creating production order, it is what is used.

RE: BOM Versions - From Qty field

The From Qty field on the BOM Version is so you can define that 'this is the BOM to use if you are making this many'. For example, you might have 3 BOMs for an Item. One BOM for making 1 to 9 units, one for making 10 to 99 units and one for making more than 100 units. You use the From Qty field to define these.

Then, when you create the Production order, AX will look at the quantity you want to make, and pick the right BOM for you. i.e. it will automatically put this BOM onto the Create production order form. However, if you want to pick a different BOM, you can.

If you set a From Qty of 500, and create a Production order for 1, AX will be unable to find the BOM to use when you are making only 1. So it will not populate the BOM on the Create production order form. However, you can still pick the BOM if you want to. Going back to my first example, it allows you to produce 110 units using the BOM that normally applies for making 1 unit, if you wanted to.

If you want to enforce minimum production order quantities, you can use Default order settings or Site specific order settings. This will cause AX to throw a warning message (but this too can be overridden).
