Difference between Link type "Soft" and "Empty"

I (think) I understand the difference between link type hard and soft i a production route. But what is the difference between soft and empty/none? If you set the parameter to soft, the next job can be started later than the previous is finished, with hard, the second job is planned to start exactly when the first is finished. What other options are there which could be planned with parameter set to empty/none?

A test shows there is no difference between <blank> and Soft.
