Chart of account across multiple companies AX 2012 R3

Hi,

We are a rather big Company with 20+ markets using AX 2009. We are planning to do an upgrade now and go for AX 2012 R3. Since we all use the same central chart of account, we thought that we'd use the function to share one chart of acocunt across all companies. However, we are having a few issues with this.

1. While the CoS is central, markets are able to add local accounts when needed. How can we make this possible? The only way I've found is to create a new local account, and exclude 19 markets from seeing / using it. It would make much more sense to add one local account and say that it's only applicable for the Company I created it in.

2. All comanies have the same set of dimensions. Some dimension values are steered centrally, while others (like branch or chassis number) is set locally. How can we set the system up so that branch is NOT shared, while cost center is. On top of that, Chassis number dimension value is generated automatically when it comes from a legacy system via the integration, and this should not be shared either.

Is there any clever way of handling a central CoA. mixed with a few local accounts. And dimension values that are mixed by being centrally controlled and locally added.

Thanks in advance.

/Björn

yes there is, by creating plural account structures or/and creating specific advanced rules. The rules work perfectly when you do not use the same GL accounts or/and dimensions for each company. Then you attach your different structures in the ledger for each company. The transactions will follow the restrictions based on the specific structures of the company.

    Thanks!

I forgot to mention that the idea was to be able to update our central CoA once in one Place. Updates happens around 4 times per year and we want to avoid updating 20+ companies. I read your reply as we need 20+ differet CoA setups?

No i wouldn't say that. You need to identify your common and different processes (transaction wise) per company in terms of use of COA. For  an example, Balance sheet structure can be attached to each company. Because usually no dimension or specific are being used. The P&L is most likely to be used differently per each company, depending on the company's nature. So lets say your salary expenses go from GL account 60000 to 60999 with dimension Department+CostCentre and it goes the same for each company, well then you just need to update this 1 structure.

Then if you have a different dimension that you need to use for company Z, for salary expenses Departement+CostCentre+Country.. you will need to create a different one in this case.

This is a very important matter. The structure and dimension combinations is the core step for the finance usage. It is very complicated and a long process, but with out it you will not get the best use of finance AX.
