Pretty much all of what they said. You don't really know beforehand how it will go unfortunately.
I would like to add a few things to consider...
1. You could start off with a workshop where you discuss technical as well as functional (financials etc) stuff. If they are good at it and seems like a good fit say that they are great and that you want these specific people for the job. Usually that is not how it works but why not... let them know the agenda beforehand so that they know. No need to make it difficult. If it is a good potential partner to do business with it should feel easy to talk to them.
2. If possible check their financials online. Where I live you can just google the company name and see how it is going for them. I would be cautious about a company that is losing a lot of money.
3. Don't just focus on picking the right partner... in my experience the biggest problem in such a project as yours is that what is going to be done is very poorly defined. This approach has always been at the customers request. It just makes planning harder and "waste" (time that customer is correctly billed but could have been avoided) to go up. Make it easy for them to do a good job and they probably will. Also it reduces cost significantly.
the selection of a partner for a migration project is always risky. if you ask for customer references then the selected partner may think, that you do not trust him. A bad start for the possible collaboration.
The better way is to invest time in one or two starting workshops to discuss your situation, your questions and the possible solutions the possible partner provides for that.
Define budget and time frame, milestones, steps, priorities, check, what really needed, what not, etc.
Define the minimum feature package for the golive.
Thats the best way to check if the partner is a poser. Poser always have great references but often deliver not what they promise.
2. get proposals from a few different partners, this way you will be able to see if anything sticks out
3. without divulging too much information you can post some in this forum for experienced users to verify what the partner is proposing makes sense, or ask someone with BC experience, or feel free to message me to confirm
In addition, AppSource also allows you to search for partners
Hope this helps.
Thanks.
