it's posible set up parent-child items structures in Dynamics Ax2012 ?

We have a catalog of 150 items, many of them are generic, that is, an item is used to make purchases in several different versions.

Item hierarchies can be used for this??

the user does not intend to create and load endless lists of items; many of which are purchased once a year and in small quantities

We have Ax2012 R3 CU 8

Not entirely sure what you mean.

You can create any relationship between items in AX by using relationship function on the product.

If you have a "master product" that have many different versions, you should use configurations.

I guess BOMs and item structures won't work in this case.

Product Master is used for this purpose, commonly, where you can define versions of items using Product dimensions such as color, size configuration, Size etc.

are basically supplies for domestic consumption, for example, servers, notebooks, folders, printers, laptops, items for marketing area, desks, chairs, tables, etc.

Then, yes. Procurement categories.

That is their purpose.

The great thing about them is that you can set up financial posting for them overriding the item group posting settings.

You can even purchase directly to the category without an item.

Pretty great stuff.
