OLAP and MSSQL with Dynamics AX

Hi,

we're searching for information about Data Warehousing in AX and especially the following questions are important :

  • Does AX inlude a full featured MSSQL Server including SSIS, SSRS and SSAS - and are those services full accessable like on a SQL Server Instance ?
  • Is it possible to run a Data Warehouse there (and OLAP Cubes under SQL Server) with mixed Data from AX and imported external Data ?
  • In AX - Is the Tabular Model with Columnstore Index available for the Data Warehouse functionalities too ?
  • In AX - should we seperate the production ERP Instances from the Data Warehouse instance (physically or by quotas,  polices, etc.) or is it possbile and practical to run them on the same host ? (I know normally this is not best practice, but I am not sure if it could be ok right now with this new solution)

Thanks a lot !

    Hi Kurt,

    Here's my 2 cents.

    1) No, AX doesn't *come with* MSSQL server. You will have to purchase MSSQL server license separately

    2) Yes, it is basically just SSAS (since the license is purchased seperately). AX does come with pre-defined cubes and project for integrating with SSAS.

    3) <This I'm not sure>

    4) Possible - yes, in fact, you can have everything (EP,Help server, SSRS included) on the same box just like the AX demo VM. Whether it's Practical would depends on the expected work load, transaction volume, scaling concern, etc.

IMHO, go with 2 boxes/VMs would be the better option.

    Cheers,

I can answer this question as I was a BI architect.  The truth is that the out of the box cubes will not satisfy Medium level Enterprise requirements. If the requirements are big enough, I'd build my own.  There are just too many things missing that a big data analytics solution would need with the out of the box solutions-->

***Current support for new software platforms

***best practices when it comes to indexing

    ***Fact tables set up appropriately

    ***ODS and managed metadata

    ***data cleansing functionality

    ***Decision support

All of these are missing and that is what would worry me.  The tabular model is not supported right now, nor do I see any column store indexes.

I'd recommend developing your own ODS and going that way.  The cube stuctures in the Dynamics models can be imported and altered to fit your designs.

And yes, you should still use seperate instances.
