HTML included in field in Excel export

When we export Activities, of type Email to excel, we can see various HMTL tags in the "Description" field. I nunderstand this is related to this field being able to support special formatting for sending of emails. However the HTML artifacts should not export. They also show in the Activites pane on the sales dashboard. Woudl anyone know if there is a way to prevent this?
