Note not in timeline, but can't save record

Hello-

I have a user dealing with a "lost" note that I'm hoping I can save for them as it was created during an hour long discussion with their client and the note would not be easy to recreate.

Essentially, my user created the note, but before clicking "Save" or "done", switched to another tab on the record. When they went to save and close the record, they got a message that "You haven't saved your timeline note entry yet. select Cancel to stay on this page. If you select OK, the information you entered will be lost."

However, the note is no longer on their timeline, can not be found using advanced find, and doesn't seem to exist anywhere.

On the off chance that the note may have been saved *somewhere* (or even the metadata for the note), I'm wondering if anyone else has dealt with this problem and found a good solution for it? Where might the note exist if it's saved enough to prevent the record from being closed but not enough to appear on the record?

Thanks!

RE: Note not in timeline, but can't save record

    Hi,

First of all, I am able to reproduce this. I tested this on the Opportunity form. When I move to other tabs while having an unsaved note, it shows me the above error. However, when I move back it is still there.

Interestingly, when clicking on the Activities tab, the same warning is shown but when I come back to the timeline, it refreshes and note disappears.

I'm afraid in this scenario the note is not saved in the database (this means your note is lost and cannot be recovered).

Answer to your question "Where might the note exist if it's saved enough to prevent the record from being closed but not enough to appear on the record?" is:

Initially, data resides in the form (HTML) just like any web application, it is only committed to the database once the form is saved. If the user closes/moves away from the form data is lost.

RE: Note not in timeline, but can't save record

    Hi PADuppong,

Thank you for using Microsoft Dynamics Communities.

Basically if you didn't click on "Add Note" button after insert all information, the note was not created and information not commited to database. In that case, even a backup restore could not recover your note (as explained by Wahaj Rashid).

Even if you have changed some information on the form and saved the changes (by clicking on Save), if the "Add Note" button was not clicked, this note will be lost after close the form. For this reason the mentioned warning appears You haven't saved your timeline note entry yet. Select Cancel to stay on this page. If you select OK, the information you entered will be lost."

Unfortunatelly, there is no way to recover your missed note data.

    Thanks,

RE: Note not in timeline, but can't save record

    Hi Ricardo,

    One thing to note here:

When users have an unsaved note in timeline and click on Activities tab, no warning message is shown. And when users move back to timeline, it refreshes and the note is gone.

It seems to be a bug, try reproducing with following steps:

    1. In Sales Hub, open an opportunity record.
    2. Add a note to timeline, do not save it.
    3. Click on Activities tab (notice no warning is shown).
    4. Move back to Summary tab. Timeline refreshes instantly and note is gone.

Please note, this does not happen when you click on other tabs. If you repeat above steps and click any other tab instead of Activities, lets say Quotes, a warning message about lost of unsaved note is shown and if you cancel and move back to Summary tab, note is still there that can be saved now.

As per my understanding, when you move to Summary tab from Activities tab, timelines automatically refreshes to show the latest activities. Ideally, it should not refresh if unsaved data is there in timeline.

    Best,

    Wahaj
