According to the NAV 2013 System Requirements document, NAV 2013 will not install SQL Server 2012 if a compatible SQL Server is already installed. I have SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 Enterprise 64-bit version, which is compatible, but NAV 2013 still installs SQL Server 2012. What's going on?
Thanks.

Hi there, what options were you given to use/install SQL 2014 for your Nav database (NavDemo or otherwise)? It looks like it's just installing 2012 by default. Did you have SQL 2014 already installed on that box, or have SQL 2014 on another server?
I'm trying to use multiple tiers, Nav 2013 R2 on my Apptier and running the database on another server, running SQL 2014. Install options don't tell me or give me an option to point at another server, just tries to install SQL 2012 Express.
Tried with SQL Server 2014 on a different server from the application one and it works smoothly
You can run Microsoft Dynamics NAV Service installer from CD_DVD\2013 R2\ServiceTier
We have Installed SQL Server with instance name as NAVDEMO.
After that we installed NAV 2013 R2 and chose the option as Install Demo.
NAV 2013 R2 got installed and did not installed SQL Server Express as expected, but NAV installation did not installed NAV Server or the service for using RTC.
I am getting an error in the NAV 2013 R2 Admin console that the dynamic NAV server is not installed on this computer. If I check the service there is no service for dynamics NAV.
Now how do I install the dynamics nav server for RTC.
this is a firewall issue or an order of operations
if you have not installed the demo database to your sql server instance [does not matter what name it is] do
this first. then ensure the firewall ports are open.
next installed NAV Services Server (custom) or development enviroment including Server (custom) and in the sql server put in your SQL info and it will connect to that instance on your SQL Server
it will not install the demo database fro the NAV Services Server install in one mass install you need to run the installation on both servers (then your not stuck with NAVDEMO instance)
This is the step I left out:
Setup Options for Microsoft SQL Server
When you are running Microsoft SQL Server Setup, you must provide additional information. Your responses can affect how you use SQL Server with Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013.
Instance Configuration
If you plan on installing the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Demo database with Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013, and you want Microsoft Dynamics NAV Setup to use an already installed version of SQL Server (and not to install SQL Server 2012 Express) you must create a SQL Server instance named NAVDEMO in SQL Server before you install Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013. Otherwise, Microsoft Dynamics NAV Setup will install SQL Server 2012 Express automatically, even if there is a valid version of SQL Server already on the computer. If you do not plan to install the Demo database, or if you have no objection to using SQL Server 2012 Express, you are free to use the default instance and Instance ID on the Instance Configuration page, or to specify any instance name.
Is anybody else having this problem? I also tried creating a new database on the SQL 2008 R2 instance using NAV 2013 Development Tool and pointed the NAV 2013 service to the new database instance using NAV 2013 Administration Tool and got an error when opening NAV 2013. It appears that SQL Server 2008 R2 64-bit is not quite supported yet.
NAV 2013 did not give me any SQL Server options. It just installed a SQL Server 2012 instance.
During the installation you need to specify or modify the parameter for SQL Server. Usually you have to remove the instance name. My guess you missed that and NAV setup installed a second instance.
