Hi,

We are using Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 and we would like to Migrate to Dynamics 365.

We are using most of modules in AX with limited customization, what is the level of complexity in migrating from R3 to 365.

Regards,

It depends from where you start  and where you end up. Its an 'how long is a piece of string?" question.

If you have wide use of all modules and have many customisations and add ons and lots of data, and also make changes to your data structure or implement new features then it will be major and a reimplementation may be a better option.

    Consider:

    -  user retraining -how complex are your processes how many staff?

    - the hard seal of overlayering  and the move to extensions. Do you have major developments or isv modules? Payro-l? Localised taxes?

    - that customised forms will need a new ui

    - customised reports need rewriting?

    - licensing has changed so security profiles probably need revisiting?

    - can you go big bang or do you have to go company by company, or region by region?

    - whether on-premise or on cloud - either way there are  changes to your deployment.

I suggest list out such things with the necessary detail- how many reports, workflows interfaces, data records,  cusomisations, users, etc?. Then you will understand what needs to be done, and can then assess the work required for each.

There is a detailed guide for this in the documentation. Have a read, and if you have specific questions, you could come back with those:

    docs.microsoft.com/.../upgrade-overview-2012

It does not sound too much complicated compared to previous migrations. The major difference is that you need to get used to the tooling, such as management via LifeCycle Services portal, how to promote code via a VSTS Build environment and deployable packages, what are the new features in D365fF&O that you need to consider reimplementing using new functionality, etc.

One bit of information to add:

AIF technology no longer exists in D365 - so any interface you built with AIF you will have to re-build from scratch, so that would be additional effort and complexity for you.

Not just what Zvika has mentioned, but there are much more deprecated or not implemented features. You may find it on the sub-pages of this main article (in the left hand column):

i think it will be better for us to re-implement and install ax 365 with new database

It will almost certainly be a more predictable time and cost and less risk. that way, with fewer constraints of legacy data formats.

Few companies have the depth of Ax experience as Vilmos's team, so its probably the right answer for many.

In addition to earlier conversations, without performing a SWOT it would not be an easy decision.
