Queries on upgrade from Ax 2012 RTM to D365 cloud and on premise

Posted on by 515

Hi All,

Our customer is using AX 2012 RTM CU2 and wanted to upgrade to D365 but not yet decided wether they should move to on premise or Cloud. They want to first compare both the version and then will decide.

So I have some below queries regarding the upgrade-

1. What is difference between the License cost for D365 on premise & cloud version? Can anybody please provide me the cost distribution based on user type for both version?

2.How to map license user type in AX 2012 with D365? (current license user role e.g.functional,CAL user how we can map it to Full user,Activity or Team member?)

3.We have designed new whole module which includes so many forms, table, reports. Does this new objects will directly taken care during code upgrade or do we need to redevelop it?specially forms?

4.As we can't upgrade directly from Ax 2012 RTM to D365 , we have to first upgrade to R3/R2 and then to D365.So do we need license for R2/R3 and D365 as well?

5.Also, we have integration exist with other system whose database are stored on same SQL server where AX database resides. If we decide to move to D365 will this integration be supported with D365?Will there be any need to upgrade this integration as well? From Ax we are just calling web service of these integrations so will they also need upgrade? If we upgrade SQL version , .NET version will this service call be possible in that case?

6.Currently we have 3 servers - Dev, Pre-Prod and Prod server. How we will be able to get these 3 types of servers when we move to D365 on premise and on cloud? If we increase the number of server will it have any impact on cost?

7.If we consider cost wise then which one is better ?on premise or Cloud?

8.What about the enterprise portal, workflow we have in AX 2012? Will be able to use Employee self service and workflow as before ?or is there any changes?

RE: Queries on upgrade from Ax 2012 RTM to D365 cloud and on premise

    1) it can be deployed to Singapore data center: www.microsoft.com/.../dynamics365-finance-operations

    2) you should ask your local Microsoft representative. But usually the on prem licenses are not yearly fees. Instead you buy them once and then pay certain percentage yearly on top of that.

    3) it depends a lot on the available resources and expertise. But it's definetely not something you can go through in a couple of months.

    Hi All,

    Few more questions-

1.Our customer is Singapore based client.I want to know does the cloud version stores the data in singapore DC?

2.Again on licensing (if anybody knows as its urgent) on premise license cost is an annual basis?(full user -4500 USD ,Activity user 1200 USD,team member -190 USD)

3.what should be tentitive timeline for any upgrade project? ( we have almost 2 totally newly created modules , workflows,EP and very less customization of standard) (For upgrade from Ax 2012 ->R3->D365 OR re implement D365)

    Thanks ,

    Shri

Edited: I thought I found anthe article about the topic but it was about Dynamics AX (AX7) to D365FO licensing changes.

I suggest you ask your local Microsoft representative. The licensing conversions and prices might vary case by case so I think you will get the best answer directly from Microsoft.

RE: Queries on upgrade from Ax 2012 RTM to D365 cloud and on premise

    1) I don't know if there are any official reasoning available for the number of different nodes for the installation. Might be related to the required nodes for a failsafe Service Fabric cluster. Maybe you can ask Microsoft. To my understanding you can't choose to not install MR (at least not in the cloud). The installation is standardized and everyone will have the same components.

    2) In the cloud you will definetely have more machines but you will have 3 environments that are included in the licenses. In addition to that you need to purchase development environments for each developer, and additional test environments if you need more than one test ennvironment (or if you need a more powerful test environment).

The dev environments can be hosted locally (downloadable VHD), in your Azure subscription (pay per minute) or by Microsoft (Sandbox Tier 1 add-on environments with a fixed monthly fee).

Additional test environments are available in different sizes (Sandbox Tier 2 - Tier 5) and each have their own monthly fee. I think the range is roughly 1000 - 8000 USD per month per environment depending on the size.

If you don't have a specific requirement to go for on prem I suggest you go for the cloud version. It's so much easier and also the pricing is really easy to understand and predict.

    Thanks Sukrut and Nikolaos!

    1. In system requirement, it is mentioned that it needs 3 AOS server for production instance in case of on premise. Why we need 3 AOS?all 3 server should be installed on different machines? If we are not using MR then also do we have to install MR server?

This structure is confusing to me.

2.For cloud will we get all components installed on our all 3 machines(production, dev,UAT)? So, no any hardware or machine cost we have to bare in case of cloud version?

    Thanks,

    Shri

RE: Queries on upgrade from Ax 2012 RTM to D365 cloud and on premise

    1) AAD is required for LCS

    2) LCS is required, no license cost for LCS

    3) D365FO requires more servers, but many have installed the required roles on lower number of servers than described in the system requirements. However it requires a conscious choice to ignore official MS suggestions.

Each developer requires their own devbox. And you need a build machine, too.

    4) I don't have info on this

    5) D365FO CAL, Windows licenses, SQL Server licenses. Currently SSIS is required on all AOS servers, so SQL Server licensing costs are quite high.

Visual Studio license is required for each developer.

    6) AAD Standard is free, you can find more info on Azure pricing documentation. So no extra cost here if you need it just to setup D365FO on prem.

The cloud version will definetely be cheaper.

    Thanks Nikolaos and Sukrut!

I have some more queries , i have gone through online stuff and have some doubts.

Actually i want to know below details w.r.t both cloud as well as on premise -

    1. Microsoft azure active directory/subscription is must?

    2. Connectivity to LCS is must?If yes then this connectivity is handled by Orchestrator , is there any separate license /subscription/cost we have to buy for this?

3.Current AX structure consist of 2 AOS (one per country) , EP,SSRS,IIS. We have 3 servers -  production , test and development instance. Is it required too many servers if we go with D365? On blog it shows, around 10-14 servers are required for D365.I want to understand how many physical machines are required in our scenario. Our client want to understand financial impact if we decide to go with cloud and on premise.

4.service fabric is necessary for D365? Any extra license /subscription cost for this?

5.to purchase D365 what licenses Customer will have to buy?e.g. CAL license, windows server license ,.NET license, etc.

6.To use LCS should customer have microsoft online service trial or paid subscription? If yes what is the cost?

In short, i want to give our customer comparison between cloud and on premise instnace w.r.t hardware , pricing and system requirement which will help them to decide which one to select.
