cannot see objects in AOT under Visual Studio Application Explorer

I just setup an AX 7 update 1 VM from LCS (but only installed 1 developer VM from the developer/build topology, I did not install the build VM).

Now, under Application Explorer of Visual Studio, I am not seeing any objects listed. I try to create a model and in select existing package option I notice Visual Studio is not detecting any existing packages.

How should I go to resolve this issue? Is the Build VM needed?

update: i was able to email Joris de Gruter of microsoft (i watched his presentation at the technical conference) and he helped me out with a sample solution below.

Run Visual Studio as administrator. The package folder has some strange permissions and VS can't access it unless it runs in priviledged mode :-)
