I'm trying to post a movement journal for an item with serial number. But it's showing me an error "A quantity other than 1 cannot be updated with serial number S because serial number control is activated." What does that mean ? And what should i do to be post the journal ?

    Hi Ruthj,

What quantity did you enter on the journal line? For serial number controlled items, you can only use 1 and -1. If you have more, you need to create multiple lines and specify the serial number per line.

    Hi Andre,

Thank you for answering. So, I'm trying to update the stock for the item using a movement journal. So, like you said if i can only use 1 how do you update it ? Can you please explain with an example ?

Check the Tracking dimension group for the Item. If it has 'Serial number control' ticked, you cannot. Serial number control means that you can only have a quantity of 1 for each serial number.

It means, for example that you cannot use a movement journal to create quantity 2 of a single serial number. You would need to use two serial numbers, and two lines (or possibly it would let you create one line with no serial number and use Registration to assign multiple serial numbers to that line).

Thank you Guy, that answered my question. Can you also explain how to update stock using movement journal. Can you explain with a scenario , for example if you have an item and you want to update a quantity of 500 for that item using movement journal . How do you do it and how does the serial number work in that case?

    RE: Serial number control

It depends if the tracking dimension is active and the serial number control is ticked. If you need to "move" 500 serialised items then yes you have to register the 500 serial numbers you are moving, this is the control you have put in place, you may have 10000 in stock and the system needs to know the actual 500 you are moving because you have told it that the serial number is a key control point. I believe you can register the serial numbers, but because they are in stock you need to pick the actual ones, so add a line for 500 and define each serial number in the registration screen. My question would be why you are moving them in the first place!

    RE: Serial number control

So, let me get this straight, as I have only been working with the system a year or so.  So if I create a new transfer journal, go to lines, put my part number in, in qty put for example 500 (as above example), then goto "Stock Dimensions", enter the "Site" "Warehouse" "Old Location", then repeat on the other side of the box but enter the "New Location", then go to "Stock" then "Registration", then 'spilt' the 500 units, click in the auto create boxes and then enter all the serial numbers and new locations etc, then post all, then validate & post....... You're telling me this will work!?!?!?!?!?!?  Rather than doing them ALLLLLLL individually?????? Please tell me this is true!......... thanks

I would say yes, the system needs to know the details and it gets this from the line, which the registration supports. Try it with 5 :-)
