Tried to install the wrong service pack, now won't recognize the correct one

I tried to run a service pack and received the 'cannot ascertain the version' error.  DUInstall said the current version couldn't update to the one I was trying to install.  I realized my error and tried to apply the correct service pack.  It still thinks I'm trying to update to the incorrect one.  Is there a way around this rather than to restore a backup?  I was stupid and didn't take my own backup and they are trying to track down the IT guys at the client to get the backup.

Backup does not fix the issue.

I am able to access this on client machines so will uninstall from the server and just reinstall the client.  Hopefully that will work as I'm not sure how I can update otherwise.

I imagine you're past this, but wanted to respond, if nothing, for other people that may run into this:

    1. First, the 'problem ascertaining version information' message usually is due to either not being on a version that can upgrade to the version you're attempting to go to, or you're not upgrading to a high enough version of Dynamics GP based on the version you're already on.  The duinstall.log it references is what we'd need to look at to verify.

At that point, Utilities wouldn't have touched the GP databases, so a backup or restore wouldn't usually fix or change anything.

     2.  It looks like you're upgrading to 18.5.1596 so it's normal that the GP Utilities window, right after the login window, would show this version, but the db_upgrade or DU000020 table would still be showing the old version, for PRODID 0, which is the core 'Microsoft Dynamics GP' module.

If you're still having issues, I'd open a support case so an engineer can assist in figuring out what we currently have and what needs to be done to get the databases upgraded.

    Thanks

I'm afraid I'll have to completely uninstall GP.  I was able to restore the individual databases and it still thinks it's trying to go to 18.5.1596.  I see in Control Panel that it shows as of today Dexterity is version 18.00.1128 and GP product is 18.0.1598. so they changed from previous apparently.

I can't find anything regarding this.  I have never, in 25 years had this happen.  I've received the cannot ascertain version error, but it always has to do with various modules.  This is Product 0 only, doesn't list anything else in the DUINSTALL.

To further this.  Their IT just had copies so I had to detach and then attach the backup.  It still has 18.5.1596 as the version when I launch utilities, rather than the older version.

To add to this.  When I run utilities it is listing the version as the incorrect service pack version, like it is already at that version.

When I look at DU000020 it still has all the old version for each company and the system, so the tables did not update.
