Costing Sheet question

I am starting to learn the costing sheet functionality in Inventory & Warehousing management.

We use the production control module to create and manage production orders. We however do NOT use the routes functionality.

I notice that in order to setup the cost categories which will be mapped to cost groups, the cost categories are setup under routes setup. I also understand that when production orders are created they are assigned to routes (which are mapped to cost categories and which are mapped to cost groups).

We do NOT assign routes to production orders as we do not create routes. Does this mean I am unable to create the costing sheet as I am unable to map the cost categories?

Steve

    Hi,

With cost group it should be enough to make the costing sheet work. You setup cost group on your items, calculation group as well. You setup your BOM, and setup what is left required (costing sheet, costing version) and it should be ok.

Try to download this I might help you.

    Hi Yohann.

Thanks for your answer. I have already downloaded and read the document (although it is for AX 2009). I know where to setup the cost group on the item but are you saying that I should setup calculation group on the item itself? Also, with the BOM being setup, what costing group parameter do I setup on the BOM settings amd where do I find it?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes it's in 2009 but it works the same in 2012.

Try to setup the calculation group on the item, and also the cost group on the item (component). It's a released product setup not a bom setup.

    Thank you very much Yohann

I will test it out today and if any problem I will get back to you

Ignore the cost categories in your case and use the cost groups as explained, what you can do is add in indirect costs to the cost groups to reflect a labour element where you dont define the routes but there is a cost, for example a 10% uplift on cost groups or a total of ost groups to define the labour cost (which of course is very broad brush). At a basic level you can define the costing sheet to "just" show you the roll up of the material costs with nothing else, but it can do more, and the calculation groups will show you a markup suggestion, although again not necessary.

Thanks Steve...but I have another question...By ignoring cost categories which is related to operations on a production route, will I be omitting production related costs when I do the costing sheets considering there are no cost category items included? What am I not understanding about cost categories and the costing sheet that makes me not see that I can ignore the cost categories as you suggested?

    Hi Steve

Cost categories are associated with routes. You dont do routes. Are you missing costs, simple answer is yes, you are missing the routing costs but you are choosing to do that.

You can still use the costing sheet but it cannot show you the route costs.

You can add in indirect costs and associate them to cost groups to represent a cost you are not defining, which in your case is the route, but it would be very broad.

If you used routes you would add in cost categories, then it would pick up costing for the operations, but as you dont do routes you cannot add this cost in from this level of detail!

Thanks for the answer Steven. Your answer has now raised more questions for the company. We currently use the production control module to manage our production but we do NOT use routes. Are we losing something (a benefit perhaps) by not using routes? Routes obviously is not mandatory in production as we are not using it yet using AX to manage production. Should we consider using routes? Where can I go to get a very good lesson on routes?

    Thanks for your response

BOMs are also not mandatory, but you use them :-) Are you losing something? The simple answer is yes. You could create a route to capture the costs through the factory and always auto-flush it, you could capture actual times in the route card to track the accuracy of your routes and get real costing. I would consider using routes, stage it in with auto-flushing, see what it does to the costs and the costing sheet structure.

This website always did nice short videos on different areas: organicax.com/.../8

Do you have access to DLP or Customersource?

The rest is just the usual Docs site; docs.microsoft.com/.../about-working-with-routes-in-production and of course Google for videos and blogs, there are loads out there!

    Thanks Steve for your help

I will do some reading of the material over the next few days
