Hello Experts,

I need some help in understanding what is happening with AX 2012. I have a particular item which when I look at the transactions on the items, the Cost Amount column is blank. This recently started to happen. It has never happened before. When I checked the database there is nothing in the column that should be used to populate this column

I have attached a screenshot to for your reference. Please anyone whit any idea as to what is causing this? please help.

It means that AX could not determine a cost for the item's when those sales order were invoiced. Are you able to investigate why?

If you need some pointers, please share some more information

    • the Inventory model that you have set on that Item's Item model group, and whether Include physical value is ticked.
    • On the Storage (and Tracking) dimension group on the item, which dimensions are Active and have Financial inventory ticked?
    • Is the item allowed to go negative in inventory?
    • does the item have Latest cost price ticked on the Manage costs fast tab? On the same tab, does the item have a Price set?

Hi Guy, thanks for your response, to answer your questions:

the Inventory model that you have set on that Item's Item model group, and whether Include physical value is ticked. this is FIFO and physical value is ticked.

Is the item allowed to go negative in inventory? YES

does the item have Latest cost price ticked on the Manage costs fast tab? On the same tab, does the item have a Price set? Yes but no price is set.

It is weird because this just started happening as you can see from the screenshot.

I am attaching the inventory mode

Does this co-incide with the item actually going negative inventory?

The FIFO model will cost your sales orders based on the cost of the receipts of the inventory that you are selling (i.e. if it's an item you purchase, it will use the cost from the Purchase orders). If you have no inventory (if you are going negative), then there are no POs which to base the cost on. When this happens, AX can try to use find the cost elsewhere. It can look at the Price field of the Manage costs fast tab. If that is blank, then AX cannot find a cost to use.... so it will use nothing.

However, because you are using the FIFO model, you are also using the Closing and adjustment functionality (i.e. Inventory close). When you do receive and invoice some Purchase orders for these items (or Production orders, or whatever), Inventory close will assign the cost from them to the Sales orders. Retrospectively, if you like.

Thanks for the insight Guy. What I dont understand is why it calculates cost amount up until the 21 og august only?

Is the 21st of August the day that inventory started to go negative?

That's correct Sir Guy. Not sure why but am think AX 2012 may have a limit to how much in the negative you can sell. Could this be the case? I have added the image so you can see.

If you allow negative inventory, there is no limit on how negative you can go.

There's not much you can do other than continue to raise POs as and when, Invoice those POs and periodically run the Inventory close routine.
