Dear experts,
an issue I have noticed in many implementations I've worked on in the past was that the description field length on posted transactions and in journal lines in D365FO/D365 Finance is 512 characters. However, wherever in the system the description isn't entered manually but populates the journal line or the posted transaction using the Default description functionality, the text deriving from the default description is truncated to a length of 60 characters.
Speaking to developers, they say that this function is rooted so deeply in the posting engine of D365FO that they are not able to touch this and shy away from doing so, as the implications are huge. When raising it to Microsoft support, the polite reply we get is:
>>We understand that the functionality isn't working as you expected and might be negatively impacting your business. Despite that, we're unable to fix the issue now due to the magnitude of the fix, other priorities, or both. We'll continue to track this issue, and monitor any related suggestions in the ideas portal. Ideas allow other customers to review it and vote on the suggestion. We regularly review and evaluate suggestions and use them as a data point to help us identify our future work.<<
One of my more senior colleagues told me that in old Axapta and AX versions, the description field itself was limited to a length of 30 characters and so were the default descriptions, then it was increased to 60 characters and the default description length as well. However, when it was increased to 512 characters, the length of the default description stayed at 60.
Now my question is if any of you had the same issue and how did you resolve it or which workarounds did you apply?
