Batch numbers for production orders

Posted on by 1,048

Our customer is used to using [Work order No].[Line No].[Assemby No].[Batch No]

e.g. 1234567.2.0.1 to identify WIP.

We are gong to use Production Orders with Routings, Output Journals etc.

I noticed that there is a 'Batch Name' for output journals, but I think this is different and is just a collective name for the group of output journal lines being posted.

Since I can't see any other way in NAV to have a "[Production Order].[Line No].[Batch No]", would it be sensible for me to name each 'Batch Name' as

[Production Order No].[Line no].[Batch no]

(forgetting the Assembly number as I don't think this is too necessary)

e.g. 1234567.2.1  ?

This would mean a batch number for every posted 'prod order/line/batch', and that I could not post the batch until it was finished.

And, is there a better way ?

Thanks

Dave K.

You can make many different solutions for your problem, but all of them needs customization. I said one version "from head", but the right way is to make business analysis of requirement and after that the best way of problem solving.

While Aleksandar's solution would 'work', I don't think I will implement it, because the batch numbers are associated only with the output and not the Production Order.

I will try instead to drop the batch number completely and split quantities across new production order line numbers where required. This can be done at the planning worksheet level (splitting SO line quantities into smaller Production order line chunks), or within our Data capture app (when a run is prematurely finished) etc.

    That would be better.

The reason for a.b.c was because I thought that NAV would consider 12345.1.3 the same batch as 13579.2.3

    (Both batch number 3).

If this doesn't matter, then I will use your suggestion.

    Thank you.

OK, but why you have to make batches using [Work order No].[Line No].[Assemby No].[Batch No]?

    You have:

-[Work order No] on 'Prod. Order No.' field on Output Journal

-[Line No] on 'Line No.' field on Output Journal

-[Batch No] on 'Journal Batch Name' field on Output Journal

You can join this three values in on new custom field if you have to have this information.

You can split quantites per some different dates based on same PO.

When you want to post, first make filter on desired date and than start posting procedure.

NAV will posting only filtering line. Rest will be remain for next posting.

    Something like that...

    I forgot to mention...

We are also writing a data capture program in C#

to create the output journals using the NAV web services

This could create new or split batches when necessary

Also using the web services (exposed pages).

RE: Batch numbers for production orders

For example, we have a Production order to produce 100 items.

This might be done in 3 batches 30, 30 and 40 items

Which would be batches 1, 2 and 3.

They could be done over different days.

This is especially useful when we need to split batch.

For example: intended qty is 100 but 60 are produced but it is the end of the shift.

Or they need to swap to a different order for some reason.

Creating a 2nd batch number for the remaining 40 items would solve this.

The main thing is, that batch numbers are definitely required.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

Batch Name for all journals in NAV is "collective name" for the group of journals. It is not clear to me, why you want to use Batch Name for WIP? We usually use material quantity in 'WIP', but no output quantity in WIP.

You have report Inventory Valuation WIP, but this is not expected output quantity. This report present Consumption, Capacity and Output costs.

Expected output quantity is on PO header. Can you describe reasons precisely?
