Dynamics GP - 2018 - Is it web enabled.

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

I'm new to the GP product.  To utilize GP we are currently required to sign on through a Remote Desk Top application (with a unique user ID and password) and then into Dynamics GP with still another user ID and password.  We're a Microsoft shop and use AD, but are in the process of going into to the cloud with GP via a third-party provider.  One of our primary requirements was that the GP solution be web enabled without any form of RDP or other logins (i.e. we could log in directly via browser, in our case Edge).  Using a remote desktop seems to prohibit us from using Sharepoint in the manner we would like and also seems very clunky and archaic for our users.

What we're hearing is that GP is not fully web enabled.  Can anyone provide some high level guidance or informed opinion.

All the previous answers are very valid to the point of accessing GP remotely over the Web.. However, you mentioned the fact that you want to use Sharepoint (online?).. I presume as you're talking about cloud that Sharepoint online would be used in your case by allowing end-user to authenticate against their Office365 AAD credentials and do the same with GP ? Unfortunately this might only work up to a certain point.. But both options of setting up the GP Web Client (which I don't like as being too limitative) or FastPath SSO (better, as you keep the full GP client) might be a solution to look for if you don't want the users have a separate login to access the ERP system.. Saving files or report outputs to Sharepoint will be the other challenge, but should work anyway, as users will be authenticated already with their O365 creds.

As for going "cloud" with GP, it really depends on how many users and how much budget you have.. Hosted GP is fixed price per month / user and you don't have much to care about GP as it's all maintained by the hosting partner.. But you could setup your own 'cloud' option by putting your GP into Azure and manage it all by yourself. Do the math on which one suits better for your budget. Numbers are available from Microsoft for Azure and by various hosting partners for GP online.

Everyone has a bunch of good recommendations.

Depending on your needs, you may be able to use FastPath (for the single sign on) along with publishing GP as a Remote App. This should allow you all of the benefits of a RDP environment, but only leave users with a shortcut to GP that would allow it to function almost as if it is local to their machine. Saves on anyone needing to spin up Edge, allows you to only need to update 2 workstations when updates roll around (RDP and SQL servers), and usually blows users minds when you tell them that this application they are using is actually not even on their workstation.

There are some issues you can run into with Remote App, but it would likely be worth the short setup time to see how it works in this new environment.

I am also not 100% sure FastPath would work in this situation, but I am sure they (or your reseller) can answer that question.

There are offerings to have GP hosted on the web either using Remote Desktop and the full more powerful desktop client or using the web client. Talk to Njevity.

If you want to stay with the Desktop client, hosted or on premise, there a single sign options available from FastPath.

What does the sentence mean "Using a remote desktop seems to prohibit us from using SharePoint in the matter we would like?"

Honestly, RDS (not using a VPN, but just https over the Internet) is a solid option. The web client is fine, but using the full GP client is always better.

Along with what Richard mentioned, Dynamics GP Web Client is the closest to an web enabled application we'd have.

That being said, it isn't a fully online application but a way to access Dynamics GP via browser without needing to login to the Dynamics GP desktop application, nor even have it installed on the user's machines/workstations.

You can also setup 'Identity Management' functionality, which will allow users to be able to login to Dynamics GP via Web Client, by only entering their Windows account that has permissions to Web Client and which is tied to their GP user/login.

Using a third-party/external certificate, you can potentially make Dynamics GP Web Client available over the Internet, so users don't need to VPN or connect to the network first.

Let us know if you have further questions.

    Thanks

GP has never been web enabled however there is a web client. With this you tie your  FQDN to a user in GP for a single login The web client is not meant to be forward facing so your users will still need to connect to some type of terminal server. I have heard of ways of getting around this but I will leave that for others to comment.
