Dynamics GP Freezing for Select Users

Hello everyone,

My company is currently running Dynamics 18.3.1200(2020) on a 2016 server with 2017 SQL server. All the users remote to the app as it is installed on the server. I have a handful of users who's GP will freeze randomly. No error message of any kind, no "not responding" message, it literally just locks in place. Has anyone else encountered this issue on this version?

Thank you

Do you have access to SQL Activity Monitor?  If so, do you see any locks?  (I'm thinking it could be a process that is running that is creating a bottleneck with processing.)  If you are SQL-savvy, it sounds like what happens when a BEGIN TRANSACTION has been sent and data is locked until the ROLLBACK or COMMIT TRANSACTION is executed.  You would see this as WAITING or LOCK in SQL Activity Monitor.  (SQL Profiles are useful for tracking this down if the situation happens frequently enough that running a trace is reasonable.)

Are there any SQL-level processes/jobs/integrations going on?

Do the users experiencing lock-ups work with similar data - for example, remote sales people all accessing Sales Transaction Entry - that may isolate the functionality that may be involved?

Is there any pattern to the lock-ups and someone pasting with TitaniumGP (as I'm assuming that is the product/functionality you are calling "Titanium")?

Anyone found a solution to this?

This has been going on for us for a whole month now with no solution. We have one user whose session always freezes after about 2 hours of work then it becomes consistent. This always happens when she is allocating orders. Someone has to sign her out of the terminal server each time.

We have done everything described above. Logged her into another workstation as someone else in both windows and GP but still the freeze occurs.

I am starting to believe it has got to do with GP background processes.

    Any new ideas out there?

If it is just these 5 users, try dropping their accounts from GP and re-add them. Do not set up business alerts or favorite reports. Start fresh clean home page with the new accounts and see if that helps.

Adding to what Richard and Beat have mentioned, if the users just use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to the terminal server and access Dynamics GP, do they see the same issues?

Also, if you go through anything extra like a Citrix session, RemoteApp or anything such as that, we'd want to remove those from the equation as well, to see if the issue remains.

If the users can login to Dynamics GP fine but have the application freeze on them while they're working, we'd want to find out if the issue is completely random or specific to a certain process.

As well, if you have any third party products, we'd want to remove those as well, which you can do by having users log out of one of the terminal server's GP instance, then renaming the GP directory and running a Repair against it in Control Panel > Programs and Features. This will re-create the entire GP directory to include all folders and files, but without any third party products nor customizations/VBA.  It also will not have the modified forms/reports with it.

Once you get the 'clean' GP directory, have users login to it to see if you can re-create this issue with GP freezing, if not, then we would add back the third party products or customizations, one-by-one, testing after each one is added, to see if the issue appears again, which would seemingly indicate that product or customization may be the cause.

If this issue only occurs to a couple users but not all, then it becomes a matter of trying to determine what is unique with the 'bad' users compared to the 'good' users. Have them login to different terminal servers to see if the issue follows them, so we can determine if the issue is more user or machine specific.

    Thanks

    Hi MLopez1999,

Can you isolate the problem to a specific RDS server ? you said you have 3 of them... does it happen randomly on all of them or just 1 or 2?

is it always the same 5 users having the issue? what were they doing right before GP "froze"? Sometimes its a user that wants to run a specific report that brings the entire server into the knees because it draws a lot of resources and impact other users...

Have you tried to take the Titanium add-on out of the equation? i.e. remove it from one RDS server completely to see if that's the culprit.. I do understand that you likely use RDS in a pool of servers to spread the load/demand across the 50 users..

I thought this was an issue as well but they receive the same issue when both in the office & when working remote. Though they have stated it happens less while working remote.

Does it is possibly have something to do with their connection? If they were to connect from another site would this problem follow them?

It is installed on 3 of the terminal servers but the users who do not use the terminals access GP via a Remote Desktop Services (RDS). We only have the licensing to use the RDS on one of the terminals. The only users who freeze are the ones using the RDS and even then it is only about the same 5 users out of 50

So your server has a GP client and you are using this server as a terminal server? If one user freezes do all the users freeze? How are your users connecting? Are they just using RDP?

I am able to minimize the program when it freezes. The cursor is still movable but when the user or I attempt to click nothing happens. The buttons don't move respond to the clicks. Every window just locks into place. Cannot close the individual windows nor move them around the screen. We currently have Titanium GP as a third party app but it has never caused an issue before.
