Note that GUI tests are very fragile (= expensive to maintain), slow and it's difficult to find the cause if a test fails (because you usually test too many things at once and you don't know which one failed).

What I usually recommended in AX 2012 (when people insisted on automated GUI testing) was starting with semi-automated tests in Microsoft Test Manager (see Record and play back manual tests). You must define tests anyway before you can automate them and this allows your testers to run parts of tests almost immediately, before you have a solution for full automation. Test Runner doesn't work well with certain things like lookups, therefore getting everything fully automated would require some additional effort, but you surely can do it if you decide that full automation of UI tests makes sense in your situation.

You may have a look at Automated Testing with Coded UI Tests:

Coded UI tests is the same thing I'm talking about. You record a manual test and then can run it automatically. But you'll find that it doesn't work that great with certain features of Dynamics AX; that's why I mentioned that achieving full automation would require additional work. You would create a coded UI test from a recording and change the code.

I think that allowing testers to fast-forward some parts of manual tests is still very helpful even without full automation.

Hi Norseman, in case you are still looking for UI based automated testing tool, I suggest you to try on Executive Automats https://executiveautomats.com/

I'm personally affiliated with this project and I'm pretty sure there is actually no real competition on the market for this kind of solution in regards of its usability and easy to use aspects for AX2012/D365

There are good points raised by Martin that UI based automated tests are fragile to maintain and track for results - but it not relates to Executive Automats. Here, you may create and run a complete testing scripts in few minutes that are super easy to modify, recreate and schedule - and no coding skills are neeeded.

Anyway, anytime, you may investigate this solution and try for free :)
