Importing Contacts as Leads (not Contacts)

Posted on by 120

I want to export those who have clicked a link in my Customer Journey (I know how to do this) and then Import them and turn them into a Lead (not a Contact, since they are already a contact, obviously, since that is the only way to email them).

I tried to import with the Leads template D365 provides, but it noticed they're duplicates (because they are already in the system as a Contact).

I am trying to import them as LEADS not Contacts.

I hope this makes sense. Anyone know of a way to do this?

My overall goal is to score those who have activity after receiving my emails, but you can't do this unless they're a lead.

Thank you for the help. I successfully imported a Lead but they aren't showing Lead Scores still. Anybody know why importing a Lead, and then having them have email activity after the fact, still wouldn't show in Lead Scoring?

I am assuming this is a standard CRM data import.  The standard CRM data import wizard has an Allow Duplicates option, if you set this to Yes then the Duplicate Detection rules are not triggered for the import.

(note: as you are exporting from CRM, you will want to remove the first 3 columns, that are in hidden columns in Excel, from the export file [contains GUID and checksum info])

(in the following link point 12 is roughly where the Allow Duplicates option is)

Anyone else know how to import contacts as LEADS not CONTACTS (they're already Contacts). Thanks!

We tried implementing an avoid-duplicates workflow (or maybe it was this matching strategy, I didn't do it so not clear) and while it worked for manual creations of the leads, it didn't work when the Lead tile was used in Customer Journeys. The Lead tile always creates brand new leads, even if that one person already became a lead during last week's email send.

    Hi backinstereo,

    As written here:

"When generating contacts and leads automatically (such as after a page submission or event registration), Marketing applies matching strategies to decide whether a matching lead and/or contact already exists before it creates new ones. Each matching strategy compares field values for the lead or contact that the system is about to create against the matching field values for existing records, and only creates a new record if no match is found."

Did you try using matching strategies? Looks like it can help solve your problem: once lead is created from this customer journey, no new duplicates will be created afterwards

    Hi Martin,

I have tried that. The problem is, I send to the same list of people every week and the Lead tile just creates duplicates if that person clicks an email every week. I don't want them to be a lead every time they have email activity, just at that initial email activity, if that makes sense.

    Hi backinstereo,

If I may have a suggestion - there is a better solution.

In your customer Journey, add a Trigger and specify a condition (link clicked). Then as a next tile on a positive path just drag and drop tile Lead. This way, Journey will create your leads automatically, and you can score your leads.

    Example:

    Hope this helps
