Duplicate My Notifications - RTC

Posted on by 834
NAV 2009R2 (Version US Dynamics NAV 6.0 SP1) 6.0.33046.0
I can create duplicate “My Notifications” in NAV2009 RTC.
For example, if I enter a Purchase Quotes, enter a Note (selecting a To:, clicking Notify:,  and then clicking Send).  I’ll witness a My Notification in the appropriate Role Center (in this case I sent it to myself).
If I then turn the Purchase Quote into an Order, go to the Purchase Order and Post the Receipt.  Afterwards if I go back to My Notification in the Role Center, I’ll see a duplicate notification (I’ll see the one created previously / and the one created when posting the receipt).
I can view the notification, which references my purchase quote, but it does not allow me to open the page, likely as the quote no longer exists.
So my questions;

1.       Is this by design?  If so, what’s the reasoning?  Why create one automatically when posting the receipt?

2.       Is there a setting that can be adjusted to eliminate duplicate My Notifications?

Voting on this is a little awkward. I've put together a little guide on doing so:

    • Log on to http://connect.microsoft.com/.
    • Create an account by going to Sign In
      • Top right corner, drop down list, select `Microsoft Account`. (You may need to select the option to create an account or sign in with another)
    • Log in with you're new or existing detials.
    • Search through the Product Directory for NAV and “Join” the NAV Group. This will add you to said group giving you a further option to:
    • Select Microsoft Dynamics from the Drop Down in the top right.
    • Where you will click “Search Existing” and search for “Notifications” and then select “[Bug] Duplicate entries in "My Notifications"” in the list.

From here you can vote on this. Also please leave them feedback, preferably on how annoyed customers and end users find this "Software Feature" that isn't a "Bug".......

the links are working fine. for the http://connect.microsoft.com/ link you need an account. we can only hope, that this bug will be fixed soon. the more people comment on that bug @ connect, the better.

RE: Duplicate My Notifications - RTC

I've raised this a bug and been pushed back by MS support. They have also not confirmed to me if they are going to charge for telling me that this "unintentional behavior following current design" which I have to say that 7 days later, and chased up I'm not impressed about. However I have followed their advise to log this as an issue on http://connect.microsoft.com/ . Please if you are having issues with Notifications add a vote to the following issue.

    https://connect.microsoft.com/dynamicssuggestions/Feedback/Details/801228

My feedback on that page is as follows:

    11 December 2015
    16:25

    Please have a look at:
    community.dynamics.com/.../456532

The notifications are getting Duplicated by just about any process that happens to the document that the original note was assigned to.
Since it will happen on every single Shipment and Invoice that is done against a Sales Order I've seen a customer with other 30 of the same notification in it.

Every time I discuss this with Developers, Implementers, customer..... Anyone. This is seen as a bug. However the Microsoft support channel responded (Sokratis Papachristos (GITPS) <a-sokpa@microsoft.com>) and defined this as "unintentional behavior following current design" in an e-mail to me:

"Hello again. Unfortunately, since it’s just that design change, is reported through other channels. We are a break-fix channel and handle bugs,
(unintentional behavior following current design), and as this works as documented (and designed), this feedback should be better directed to product group, as a feature request change.

We used to report feature change requests through MSConnect, but we now have yammer groups as well, monitored by product group. It is important to mention that product group will accept design changes from support,
only if they are supported by substantial number of support requests."

This leaves us in a situation where we cannot get this fixed. Michael B. Martin raised this issue on 17/09/13 and it's had no further votes until now. This is very poor and requires someone to look at this problem at Microsoft and say that "unintentional behavior following current design" isn't good enough. I'll certainly not be pulling any punches when I tell the customer that they will have to keep putting up with issue because Microsoft think that "unintentional behavior following current design" is OK.

The only way the customer will get this fixed is if Microsoft Partners foot the cost. Since this has been a problem (confirmed) since NAV2009 that's a lot of support requests, Dev Patches that partners will have either absorbed into their costs or the customer has been charged for - This doesn't seem like a good way to be treating your "Partners" or your "Customers".

Please - it's a replicated issue in multiple versions of NAV by Multiple Partners / Customers. It's time to fix it.

RE: Duplicate My Notifications - RTC

Hi John and Microsoft NAV team

I'm getting the exact same issue on a 2015 customer. I've tested this on my local machine with 2013R2 and on a colleagues 2016 machine. Both on unmodified CRONUS systems.

You put on an Order (Have seen this on Sales Orders and Sales Return Orders) fill in the header information and and one line. Add a note to the Order to yourself and Tick 'Notify' and Save. You will now be able to see this in your "My Notifications" area once.

Then go back to the Order, update the Qty to Ship and Post > Ship the document.

You will now be able to see the notification in your "My Notifications" area twice.

You can also see the Duplications in the Record Link (2000000068) Table.

I believe there are other ways to duplicate the Notification, however I can replicate this way is in Multiple Environments.

I've been through all Pages in NAV with *Setup* in the title and find anything regarding notifications in them.

I see this as more of a Bug than anything else. Why would an order need the same notification associating with it multiple times? I've seen several threads from 2009 all through to me proving it's still an issue in 2016 - 7 years an issue.....

It's time to justify it as a design feature or fix it.

    Regards

    Ben Dyson
