Made to order Item Number configuration

Posted on by 5

Hi -

High level question: What is the best way to configure an Item Number for a widget that is only made to order and is quick to manufacture (~1 week from start to finish)?

Background:

Our business is a custom design/manufacturing business so we are strictly made to order widgets. Once the design is finalized and a PO is received from the customer, the widget takes ~ 1 week to make and ship out.  Therefore, we do not carry any inventory for finished goods or WIP inventory either. I'd like to find a way to configure the item so that I do not need to transact a finished good into inventory then immediately transact it out. Our item numbers are also tied to a singular customer - so if there is a way to ensure an item number can only be sold to a specific customer, that would also be helpful.

Thanks-

    Hi Kate,

My assumption is that you will get more detailed feedback from the forums community regarding 'real world' use of the Dynamics GP Manufacturing module, but from a settings perspective you may want to test recording the item/Components as a 'Service' items if you want to bypass the Inventory module altogether in MO processing.

Regarding restricting Item allocation a specific customer, there is no such option in Dynamics GP although the Cards | Inventory | Customer Items window allows you to automatically change the name of the item per customer.

    Best Regards,
