Migrating Dynamics 2009 DB from MS SQL Server 2008 to MS SQL Server 2012

Hello,

We are in the process of migrating our current Dynamics AX 2009 DB from Microsoft SQL Server 2008 to Microsoft SQL Server 2012.  We were told that to do so the AOS's and the local clients would need a hotfix update.  However when we run the hotfix update on the AOS's, and the clients, the update says that there

is nothing available to update.   The screen shot below is my client version information.

When I run the hotfix AXUPDATE.EXE from the HOTFIX3:

The install simply says that there is nothing to update:

I also try to run the same update on my AOS's with AOS versions 5.0.1670 for their kernel, and 5.0.1500.1313  I get the same results.  The screen shot below is one of 2 AOS's to which most of my users connect:

All I want to do is determine what hotfix or update is necessary so that AX 2009 will communicate properly with the AX database hosted in a SQL Server 2012 server.   Surely there must be a compatibility or upgrade path that can be followed when moving an AX DB to a newer version of SQL?  We were told that both the AOS and the clients need to be in sync to do so.  But we don't know which update, if any, need to be run to successfully migrate the DB in terms of AX 2009 and SQL 2012 compatibility.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

This hotfix aims to support reporting services extensions and Analysis services in AX 2009 with SQL Server 2012.

If I’m not in mistake, you first need upgrade to kernel 5.0.1500.6491 (Rollup Update 8) before applying the hotfix.

If you have enough hardware resources, you can restore Database into SQL 2012 and redirect AOS into new SQL Server. If they in the same AD, you shouldn’t get many issue redirecting.

Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition is supported with Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 Service Pack 1 with Rollup 8 and the hotfix from Knowledge Base article 2836535.

    As per your kernel version

    5.0.1500.1313  you have Dynamics AX 2009 SP1 Hotfix Rollup 3 (RU3)

    Requirement is

    5.0.1500.6491  for Dynamics AX 2009 SP1 Hotfix Rollup 8 (RU8)

I recommend you need to upgrade your environment to Rollup 8

Please review and update us with your findings

    Nitesh,

We have the RU8 update and when I ran it on my client I got the same result:

It seems there is nothing to update?

    My client is:

Am I just crazy or does it appear that I already have the RU8 installed?

    Please advise.

    Thank you in advance

    Peter

I can't see any screenshot, but I mentioned that you have kernel 5.0.1500.1313, that is RU3

Rollup 8 finds nothing to update on my client as well.

You are running the update on AOS Server or client ?

I tried RU8 only on my client thus far.  Shall I run on the AOS as well?

Thank you for the reply.  We do not use SSRS reporting services or the analysis services within AX.  So are you saying that if we don't use the Analysis and Reporting features in AX 2009 we don't need to run any updates?

If that is the case don't the AOS's and clients need to be the same?   In our case they are not.

If they do not need to be the same then we should be able to use SQL 2012 with our current environment correct?

    Thank you in advance.

AX 2009 is certified in SQL Server 2012 with RU8 and the hotfix KB 2836535. The hotfix is focused in analysis server and SSRS extension for SQL Server. Probably, it’s safe to run AX 2009 with SQL Server 2012 only with RU8.

If I had to perform the upgrade, I would upgrade directly to the latest binaries instead of RU8. AOS binaries must be upgraded in all locations, therefore you need to upgrade all AOS and all clients. After performing the upgrade, is mandatory to compile, synchronize ,etc.

Performance these steps in a test environment before applying into the live system.
