Hi All ,

One of my client planning to upgrade from AX 2009 to AX 2012 R3 . Currently client using RF Smart application integrated with AX 2009 ,which helps to scan pallets .

Client heard that AX 2012 R3 come up with a in-built application called - Mobile application , which does same purpose as RF Smart.

Client is unsure that to go ahead with Mobile application and want to understand other client's experience/opinion.

Could any one explain that shall we go ahead with RF Smart application or Mobile application for AX 2012 R3 ?

What is the pros/cons of these two application (RF Smart and Mobile ) regarding AX 2012 R3 .

Thanks in advance.

    Hi lally,

In AX 2009, RF Smart can be used to enable the use of hand held devices in WMS I and WMS II scenarios, since native AX 2009 has no support for these types of devices.

AX 2012 R3, if you ditch WMS I/II and use the Warehouse management module instead, there is native support for for hand held devices (via the Warehouse Mobile Device Portal).

If you wish to continue using WMS I / II as you do in AX 2009, there is nothing in R3 for hand held support, and you will need RF Smart (or similar 3rd party tool, or write your own tool).

If you decide to replace the WMS I / II processes with the R3 Warehouse management module, then you may decide you don't need RF Smart.

I don't actually know whether RF Smart offer software to enhance or replace the Warehouse Mobile Device Portal, and I can't find much online except this:

    rfsmart.com/.../rf-smart-microsoft-dynamics-r3

Perhaps the decision will be made by whether the customer decides to stay on WMS I / II. Also probably worth reaching out to RF Smart to find out what they offer for WMS I / II and Warehouse management scenarios in R3.

To put it in more perspective on top of what Guy has explained, Microsoft has purchased the transportation management and warehouse management ISV solutions from Blue HorseShoe and made it's own implementation to replace the old Standard AX warehousing module. The warehousing device is part of that implementation, but it is built on top of the new modules. If you upgrade form AX 2009 that means you need to redo your inventory using the WHS/TMS setup and introduce additional business processes because it has a lot of new features (advanced reservation hierarchy, load planning, etc). It also has limitations, we have faced it when we wanted to scan license plates within pallets with a single click.

So to be able to decide whether it is useful for you or you need to purchase the newer RF Smart application version depends on whether you are able to use the new features and if it is compatible with your business processes, or not. That would be a project itself, so there is no definitive answer whether it is good for you or not, since it depends on the actual implementation and requirements.

You could try to pull both your implementation partners' expert who knows the advanced warehousing, and RF Smarts' consultants in a room and try to figure it out together to see what is the best approach.

Without knowing the configuration and requirements of your client it is difficult to say. Do they track license plates/pallets, do they require warehouses with full zone and location rules, do they require picking replenisments and full scanner movement of each step - the use of WHS can be very complex and your client could get lost in the implementation. The inbuilt scanning solution only works on the advanced warehousing. Already it is redundant and not in use with D365O.

Alternatively is it a simplistic warehouse in place where the scanners scan a pick or a receipt and RF Smart have already configured the workflows and screens?

Whilst they do the same purpose, as you say, which is to scan product at an item transaction, they do it completely differently :-)
