Can Dynamics GP with SQL 2019 Standard Runtime be installed on an Azure server or does an Azure server require Azure SQL?

    Hi Richard,

you can install GP on any Azure VM with your own SQL instance setup (or runtime by that matter), like any on-prem setup.

As Justin mentioned, be careful about the specs when configuring your Azure VM, as I just recently had done an experiment myself.  I had to upgrade 40+ GP companies to the latest version and the client's server had severe performance issues, where each company upgrade would take about 1h45 or so (my feeling is the problem was at the network level, as I got poor performance on that side and got always disconnected).

Long story short, I uploaded the backups to Azure into my demo VM where I had SQL 2016 Std installed, similar to the client's version.

My first batch of GP companies upgrade took about 17-18 min on average each.. I did only a small batch on purpose to see how it would run. My Azure VM disk (single logical drive) was using regular HDD Standard drives. I then switched to SSD Standard and the speed of upgrade would slightly improve to become 15-16 min on average.. In the end I switched again to SSD Premium (still single drive) and it got down to an average of 12 min each company, which was pretty much on par with my other upgrade experiences.

When you only have a handful companies to upgrade, it doesn't really matter, but when you have several dozens to do, speed matters.

The whole upgrade (real total time) was about 10 hours on my Azure system, whereas their on-prem server was so bad that it would have taken 73hours to complete it. The previous year's upgrade took them  12 hours as the server was still better shape, but not great.

Another client I've done upgrades multiple times, with 50+ companies, I run the upgrade from 5 different GP clients, and the upgrade is usually completed within 5-6 hours

    Hello Richard,

You can install SQL runtimes on Azure including SQL 2019. Just be aware that the Azure server needs to have all the same performance as a normal server. Usually we see issues if the lowest option for disk is selected which sometimes doesn't have the performance for GP/SQL.

We have a document I have sent out a few times, most of it should still hold true but be aware it is 5+ years old.

    Thanks!
