Posted on by 14,849

Dear

The current product item number is 20 characters long, we have items that are more than that in size?

is it OK, or Recommended to increase the length of the item number field to accommodate bigger item number?

i assume it is NOT ok, but i wanted to make sure

your feedback is much appreciated

    Hi Silvano,

In addition to what Vilmos already mentioned, please also consider your financial product dimension. Many companies automatically associate a financial product dimension with their items and extending the item number also requires a corresponding change for your financial dimensions.

Also consider possible repercussions on your analysis tools especially Bi reports that might refer to products and our product financial dimensions.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

It is not typical to increase ItemId length, 20 characters are enough to have a unique identifier for the goods, but could be done if really required. Just consider that it will impact your reports / label stickers and a lot of other area where EDT length matters, so you might end up with a lot of additional customizations in the end.

At a manufacturing company we had to include a bunch of extra details accessible from like 20+ Product Attributes, and make it searchable when selecting the item i.e. on a Sales Order. We have ended up putting the additional details in the Search Name field, whenever an attribute was changed.
